Metamorphosis of the Spirit

I am away from Brown's campus this semester for my dissertation research, and so the next set of posts will feature photos, videos, and reflections by other Brown community members who are checking in on the piano this spring.

This week's visit and reflection is from Sunray and Picasso:
"On May 7th, 2025 at approximately 19:00 hours, two living souls by the nicknames Picasso and Sunray visited the decaying piano. The evening was speckled by the sun, with intermittent rain drizzles. A rabbit and caterpillar stopped by to visit, as we attempted to make sound emerge from the 125 year old instrument.
Creatively, Picasso had thought to bring a croquet mallet, which helped us pound out the heartbeats of the old strings since playing on the keys proved to be quite muted.
The piano shows that even when we stand still, time passes- a fate we are all destined for, if we are lucky. For Sunray, the experience also served as a reminder (symbolized by the caterpillar!): that what seems like an ending is often a metamorphosis of the spirit. Energy, neither created nor destroyed, transforms.
The moment was brief, but the memory of our visit will endure even when the piano is no longer."
