Aidan Kropiwnicki, a 2nd-year Ph.D. student in Chemistry, checked out the piano today with a friend from undergrad, Joseph Varghese, who was visiting Providence from Boston. Aidan grew up playing piano and continues to practice in his free time. Both friends were eager to see how the piano had been changing over the course of the fall.
“It’s been tagged!” exclaimed Aidan, referring to the “LOMAX” graffiti etched on the side of the piano. “That’s an honor. It belongs to the Providence community now.”
“It’s changing color, just like the leaves,” Joseph noted, and held up a leaf on the lid to compare the colors. We noticed that some of the leaves had been tinged slightly purple from the piano's veneer dye. “Is it camouflaging to the woods, or are the woods changing to the piano?”
Days in place: 646
Weather: overcast and windy, 47°F
One of the hinges has detached from the lid.
Broken strings inside the piano
The piano's veneer dye has turned purple-red over time.
The dye has stained some of the leaves that have fallen on its top.
