Sun and Sticky Keys

March 10, 2023

On a sunny Friday afternoon, I met up with Envy, a second-year music concentrator at Brown, to visit the piano. It was an unusually mild day in the middle of what had been a long stretch of overcast and rainy weather. Envy quickly noticed that many of the keys were still sticking. Swollen from the rain, many of the keys wouldn't bounce back up after pressing them down, and so she starting to play around with ways to pull them back up and work with the reliably responsive keys. After some short improvisations, Envy explained that she had settled into the key of F, sprinkled with a few D-flats. She reflected that it was a nice spot that she hadn't spent much time in before. Even though it was right next to the road and the building, it still felt quiet and secluded.
