For the Brown Alumni Pride Association, the 2022-2023 academic year was one full of in-person and virtual engagement with our LGBTQIA+ community of alumni, staff, and current students. It was also BAPA’s first full academic year under its new name. The BAPA Steering Committee is pleased to present these highlights of our activities over the past months:
(June 2022) A new Steering Committee transforms the former TBGALA into the Brown Alumni Pride Association, with a new mission statement, social media channels, logo and focus on connecting LGBTQIA+ alumni
(October 2022) BAPA Steering Committee members attend Brown’s first All Advisory Council Weekend on campus to discuss the future of alumni engagement, experiences, and belonging.
(November 2022) BAPA Steering Committee members are on campus to attend the opening of Stonewall House, the new LGBTQ Center at Brown, and hosts an alumni get-together afterward in Providence.
(December 2022) BAPA hosts a holiday mixer in NYC at an alumni-owned bar. BAPA also hosts a holiday mixer via Zoom to connect with alums wherever they may be.
(December 2022 - Present) BAPA partners with other Ivy LGBTQIA+ alumni groups for monthly parties and events in NYC.
(January 2023) BAPA launches the BAPA Book Club, selecting the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “Less” by Brown alum Andrew Sean Greer ‘92, and hosting two virtual book discussions, one attended by the author!
(March 2023) BAPA sends out its first member survey in order to better understand our members’ interests in being part of BAPA so we can ensure that we are programming BAPA events around our community’s needs.
(May 2023) BAPA returns to campus for Reunion Weekend to host the BAPA Brunch and to attend Lavender and Unity celebrations for graduating students.
(June 2023) BAPA celebrates Pride Month by marching in NYC Pride under our group’s banner (and outfitted in BAPA-logo t-shirts!)
(July 2023) BAPA hosts its second Book Club event to discuss Lamya H’s “Hijab Butch Blues.”
In the coming months, BAPA looks forward to continuing its partnerships with Brown’s other affinity groups and clubs, and will be looking for new ways to expand its outreach to its LGBTQIA+ alumni community. It is also looking to expand its programming into more geographical areas to continue fostering connections wherever possible.
