Per RI EMS, EMT Students are required to complete more than half of the didactic portion of the training program prior to the beginning of their Observational rotation in the Emergency Department. Pairs of students observe for 8 hour shifts and are required to complete a Case Study Assignment.
Required to wear:
Clean khaki pants or similar (black or dark blue ok); no jeans or shorts
Collared polo shirt or similarly appropriate, solid color without writing or logos
Comfortable shoes; clean sneakers are ok
BADGE: will be distributed in class and must be returned to BEMS after
OPTIONAL: mask (suggested if you are around a respiratory patient or infectious case)
Required to bring:
Small notepad
Pen
Watch
License or other official (State) ID or Brown ID (ID must be in your pocket at all times)
Optional to bring:
Stethoscope
Pen light
Trauma shears
Procedure: (Subject to change on the hospital end; you will be updated.)
All immunization records and HIPAA agreements are filed at RIH prior to student sign ups.
Pairs of students sign up for time slots; calendar will be available in early July.
Students must obtain their own transportation to and from the hospital.
Students should check in with the Charge Nurse:
--Go to the ambulance entrance at the ED.
--Ask for guidance to find the Charge Nurse. (office is located on side B in the far right hand hallway)
--Charge Nurse should know you are coming and will arrange for your sign in--procedure is not known.
Students gather information to complete Case Study Assignment.
What you can expect to do:
Greet patients
Take vital signs and perform assessments, if medical staff allow it
Assist with patient comfort (blankets, pillows, positioning,) lifting, and moving
Other tasks as assigned by hospital staff
Expected behavior:
Arrive on time and in professional form.
Maintain confidentiality.
Be courteous and cooperative or the hospital staff will send you home.
