As writers, we will write a Non-Chronological Report, Recount, Instructions and Descriptive Narrative. Much of the writing will be linked to the Tudors.
As readers, we will read a range of non-fiction texts about the Tudors and the natural world. We will also read a range of fiction genres and poetry.
As mathematicians, we will continue to practise and increase our fluency in the areas we have previously in preceding years. Our number work will now extend to numbers beyond 1000 and will involve counting in steps of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000. Our addition and subtraction skills will be improved through learning the formal methods and applying this to numbers up to 4-digits long. Throughout the term, we will try to learn all of our tables up to 12x12. We will learn the formal method for multiplication and use it to multiply 2 or 3-digit numbers by a single digit number. Our work with fractions will be developed by adding or subtracting any fraction with the same denominator. We will increase our understading of calculations involving amounts of money (in both pounds and pence). Symmetry will be an area of focus in our shape work. We will introduce co-ordinates and the translation (movement) between positions on the co-ordinate grid.
As scientists, we will focus on biology. Children will look at food chains and food webs. Children then develop their understanding of how to classify living organisms. This begins with invertebrates where children look at the different groupings of animals without a backbone e.g. annelids. Children learn how to classify vertebrates (e.g. mammals, reptiles etc.) according to key criteria. Following this, children are taught the different names and functions of teeth, both animal and human.
As historians, we will study the Tudor period in a wider timeline of key historical events/periods. Children explore the lives of rich Tudors and contrast this to the lives of poor Tudors in Britain. Children will also learn about the lives of children in this period of history. The children explore primary sources in order to learn about various aspects of the period. The children will also learn about Tudor hierarchy and why it existed.
As Spanish linguists, we will be building on knowledge the children have already mastered in year 3, teaching the children how to count from 15 – 100. The children will also learn how to say the days, months and seasons of the year, to include learning about birthdays and festivals. The children will also learn Christmas Spanish songs.
As theologians, we will focus on Christianity and the community. There will be an introduction to Christianity and the symbolism associated with the faith. Symbolism is also linked to their design and technology work – see design and technology. The children will explore the significance of Baptism and a visit to the local place of worship with David Eames.
As designers, we will create a box to store our favourite things in, with a Christmas slant. Children design, make and evaluate their own box to contain a special gift for someone special in their life, to be given at Christmas.
As citizens, we will focus on internet safety. Key aspects of online safety are covered: information sharing; chat rooms; emails, text and messenger services; web browsing; and bullying online. CEOPS is used extensively when delivering this unit of work. The children will also develop their understandings friendships and transitions.
As artists, we will be inspired by Gainsborough Old Hall for many art projects throughout this half-term. Linked to the Tudors, we will study Holbein and his portrait of Henry VIII. Children will also use the natural world as a basis for much of their artwork, linked to their Science work. Therefore, the children will look at the work of Lanseer. Children use either pen and ink, paint or sewing to make their own Christmas card.
As users of technology, we will learn to save our work onto a cloud platform. We will also design and make (using code) our own ‘Smoking Car’ game using Scratch. We will also study key aspects of online safety: information sharing; chat rooms; emails, text and messenger services; web browsing; and bullying online.
As musicians, we will explore Tudor music, both through songs and in listening activities. We will play some music that was composed in Tudor times on our recorders and will start to learn how to play together with hand bells. We will start to learn about staff notation and note values.
As sports people, we will develop an understanding for rhythm and learn how to dance to English Country Music. We will use our skills acquired to work cooperatively with a partner. We will balance with partners focusing on support and counter balances. We will start to understand the importance of positional discipline in Netball and how communicating is an essential part of team sport. We will also start to develop an awareness of how tactics can be implemented into team sport and the advantage you could gain on your opponents.
