2023-2024 Course Offerings (3 credits to graduate)

LATIN I FULL YEAR

Following the Oxford Latin Course Part I, this course begins Brophy’s three-part introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Latin. Readings explore Roman daily life (i.e., the family, slavery, education), the city of Pompeii, and epic tales of heroes and gods. Grammar instruction centers on becoming comfortable with the Latin case system (i.e., the fact that nouns and pronouns have multiple spellings!), as well as building general language-acquisition skills foundational for further study. In addition, students will have some exposure to writing and speaking Latin. N.B. This course is specifically designed for students who have no prior experience with Latin.

LATIN II FULL YEAR

Following the Oxford Latin Course Part II, this course continues Brophy’s three-part introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Latin. Readings explore Roman history from its legendary foundings to the assassination of Julius Caesar, as well as the culture and topography of Rome itself. After systematic review of Latin I topics, new grammar instruction centers on becoming comfortable with the Latin verb system, as well as honing reading and memorization strategies. At the very end of the year, students learn about Roman holidays through a Saturnalia creative project centered on select poems by the satirist Martial. N.B. This course is designed for sophomores who completed Latin I at BCP, as well as freshman transitioning from a middle school Latin program needing some work on basic skills.

HONORS LATIN II FULL YEAR - RECOMMENDATION OF TEACHER

Students who excelled in Latin I may take this course, which also follows the Oxford Latin Course Part II but at a somewhat accelerated pace. This pacing allow the course to cover all the same topics as a typical Latin II, but with room for two elements of enrichment: 1) an introduction to Latin poetry through a full reading of “Apollo and Daphne” from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and 2) continuous work on Latin composition skills, culminating in writing letters to famous Romans inspired by the Italian Renaissance humanist Petrarch. N.B. This course is specifically designed for students who completed Latin II at Brophy using the Oxford Latin Course.

LATIN III FULL YEAR

Following the Oxford Latin Course Part III, this course completes Brophy’s three-part introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Latin. Readings explore the complex social, political, and economic forces that led the Roman Republic to evolve into the Roman Empire, as well as flowering of literature during Augustus’s principate. After a systematic review of Latin II topics, new grammar instruction centers on becoming comfortable with complex clauses in Latin, especially those using participles and the subjunctive mood. Students will also spend a good deal of time reading modern Latin novellas designed to ease comprehension and promote fluency. N.B. This course is designed for juniors or seniors who either do not plan to take Latin 4 or do not wish to read authentic Latin literature.

HONORS LATIN III FULL YEAR - RECOMMENDATION OF TEACHER

Students who have excelled in Latin II (or its equivalent) may take this course, which also follows the Oxford Latin Course Part III, but with more rigorous expectations. Unlike Latin III, students begin reading authentic Roman literature instead of modern novellas. Namely, they read select poems by the poet Horace, the protagonist whose life they have been learning about throughout in the Oxford Latin series. This course also works on Latin composition skills through a series of short creative writing projects. N.B. This course is designed for underclassman planning to proceed to Latin 4 Honors, or juniors who wish to take on the challenge of reading authentic Latin literature during their terminal year of study.

HONORS LATIN IV FULL YEAR - RECOMMENDATION OF TEACHER

Using Latin for the New Millennium Level 3, this collegiate level course builds on the knowledge and skills taught in the first three years of Latin and seeks to instill greater appreciation for the classical world, as well as increase fluency in the Latin language. Students read authentic unadapted Latin literature throughout the year including Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Ovid, Pliny, and Vergil. They also analyze these primary sources as works of literature, history, and/or biography to form a deeper understanding of the human condition and western civilization. In addition, students are given regular opportunities to activate their Latin via conversations tantum Latīne (only in Latin) inspired by interactive videos and reading circles.

ADVANCED LATIN STUDIES FULL YEAR - RECOMMENDATION OF TEACHER

This collegiate level course is for students who have completed either Honors Latin IV prior to their senior year. Using a myriad of Latin readings, students work independently to develop understanding of higher-level Latin works in preparation for a university course of study. The students themselves guide much of their learning and choose many of their own readings from centuries of Latin scholarship. As rigorous as AP, but with a more flexible, student-driven curriculum, students receive an AP weight to their GPA.
