Physical Education

2023-2024 Course Offerings (1.5 credits to graduate: 0.5 credit of Health, and 1.0 credit of PE)

Students must take a freshman semester of Health, a freshman semester of PE course (either PE or Intro to Strength and Conditioning), and then one more semester of Lifetime Fitness, Strength and Conditioning, Yoga, or Sports Medicine course before they graduate. Students can defer their freshman PE requirement in order to take a year of music or choir if they choose.

PE ELECTIVE THAT FULFILLS REQUIRED FROSH PE CLASS-ONE SEMESTER

This is a one-semester course which is centered on team games and sports that get kids moving: basketball, potato ball, volleyball, handball, water polo, Frisbee football, dodge ball, and more. This is a great option for students who like traditional team sports and PE classes.

INTRO TO STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING ELECTIVE THAT FULFILLS REQUIRED FROSH PE CLASS—ONE SEMESTER

This course is designed to introduce the proper use of weight-lifting and conditioning equipment. Special lifting techniques and form will be stressed.

HEALTH REQUIRED FOR FRESHMEN -ONE SEMESTER

The course objective is to have each student appreciate the gifts of mind and body that God has given him, and take active steps to maintain, or improve a healthy status. The course covers topics of Nutrition, Fitness, Stress Management, Substance Abuse and Tobacco Prevention. The class has several hands-on labs with appropriate reflections, and a strong emphasis on prevention. Students will be able to: assess their diets for proper amounts of essential nutrients/make adjustments accordingly; measure and evaluate fitness/set fitness goals; recognize causes, signs/symptoms of stress, develop healthy management techniques; and do a self-evaluation for substance abuse risk factors, understand alcohol metabolism and substance abuse health effects/have information necessary to make prudent choices about harmful substance (including tobacco). Pertinent anatomy and physiology is covered; simple mathematics equations are utilized; various social/cultural issues are discussed; and refined language skills are necessary for the presentation, reflections, and other assignments. There is no textbook for the class: students will use class handouts to compile a notebook, use web references and PowerPoint presentations, and integrate laboratory experiences.

SPORTS MEDICINE ELECTIVE: ONE SEMESTER

A one semester, .5 credit PE elective class introducing the student to athletic healthcare. Students will learn under the direction of Brophy Athletic Trainer. This includes principles of sports' injury and illness prevention, immediate care, injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. Course includes lecture, discussion, and daily hands on lab experience. The course is for students who have never taken Sports Medicine class and is a prerequisite for Advanced Sports Medicine.

ADV SPORTS MEDICINE ELECTIVE: ONE SEMESTER

Prerequisite: Sports Medicine

A one semester, .5 credit PE elective class for students who have already completed at least one semester Sports Medicine. Students will learn under the direction of Brophy Athletic Trainer. Course includes advanced concepts of sports' injury and illness prevention, immediate care, injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. Course includes lecture, discussion, and daily hands on lab experience and is designed especially for those with a deeper interest in athletic healthcare. Students will more directly assist the Athletic Trainer with athlete injury and illness management, practice preparation, event medical coverage and treatment and rehabilitation.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING ELECTIVE: SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, AND SENIORS ONLY--ONE SEMESTER

This course is designed for students who have had a semester of the Intro class or a semester of Weight Training. Students work with an instructor strength training building on the principles they've learned in the earlier course.

EXERCISE YOGA ELECTIVE: SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, AND SENIORS ONLY--ONE SEMESTER

This exercise course meets 7th period each semester and is a basic-level yoga experience that include slow, controlled movements and stretching that build body and mind. Students are required to provide their own yoga mats and to come to class dressed down in loose, comfortable exercise or workout clothing.

LIFETIME FITNESS ELECTIVE: SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS ONLY--ONE SEMESTER

This is a one-semester course which is centered on an individualized, lifetime approach to fitness and strength training. Think of it more as a gym membership--meets PE course. Students will work with an instructor to learn how to use the Nautilus equipment and aerobic exercise machines, and then develop a personalized plan that they will more than less execute individually on a day-to-day basis with instructor supervision. This is a mixed class for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

INTRODUCTION TO SALSA DANCE AND CULTURE ELECTIVE--ONE SEMESTER

We will learn the basics of salsa as a solo dance and as a partner dance, predominantly the On-2 style. We will learn dance etiquette, along with dance technique and body awareness. We will also dive into the historical background of Afro-Cuban Salsa, its roots in the deities of the Yoruba religion, and how these traces of the Yoruban Gods remain alive today on the dance floor. (This class can count as EITHER a Fine Arts class or a PE class)

ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Advanced Topics PE or Specific Sport Skills–4th or 7th period or as indicated. All Advanced PE Classes are Pass/Fail

  • Varsity baseball-two semesters;

  • Varsity football-fall semester;

  • Varsity football returning players-spring semester;

  • Varsity basketball-two semesters;

  • Varsity soccer-fall semester;

  • Varsity swimming/Diving-fall semester;

  • Varsity golf-fall semester;

Student-athletes who are on a varsity roster the entire season 8th period (after school) can also earn one semester of PE credit per the Athletic Director and head coach.

**If a specific sports skills class, class ends when the season ends. Students will then have a free period.
