If you’re questioning whether your costume is appropriate or not… It’s not, so don’t wear it.
In the spirit of the season, please consider these dos and don'ts of cultural appropriation when choosing a costume:
Blackface is NEVER okay. Someone else’s culture or race - or an offensive idea of it - should never be a costume or the butt of a joke.
It's important to pay homage to artistry and ideas and acknowledge their origins. Dressing in an outfit inspired by a BIPOC, Asian, or Middle Eastern cultural reference is best represented by a designer from that racial or ethnic identity.
Don't adopt sacred artifacts as accessories. This means Native American headdresses, Japanese kimonos, Jamaican locs, and other cultural identifiers: they may be "cool" or "stylish" to you but for those groups items like this mean something much more than most people realize.
