Welcome to 8th Grade Language Arts White!
This year, we are diving deep into the world of nonfiction. From real-world news, essays, and historical documents to powerful memoirs and investigative stories, we’ll be exploring how real events and human experiences shape our world.
Reading the text is just the beginning. A huge part of our class will revolve around classroom discussions and hands-on activities. You won't just be sitting at your desk taking notes; you'll be actively debating ideas, analyzing real-world issues, and analyzing author perspectives together.
Throughout the year, our reading and discussions will focus on key Ohio 8th Grade Learning Standards for Informational Text:
Central Ideas & Evidence: Citing strong textual evidence and analyzing how central ideas develop over the course of a text.
Author’s Point of View & Purpose: Determining an author’s perspective and analyzing how they respond to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
Evaluating Arguments: Describing and evaluating specific claims in a text to assess whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant.
Comparing Texts: Analyzing cases where two or more texts present conflicting information or differing interpretations on the same topic.
Get ready to share your perspective, challenge your thinking, and work as a team to make sense of the world around us. Let’s make it a fantastic year!
