The Key Principle of the LAB Community is Respect.
The fundamental orienting principle for the Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools (“LAB” or “the School”) community is respect. At LAB, we emphasize respect for the learning environment, our LAB community and for each scholar. LAB is committed to providing a safe and respectful school culture in which all scholars can achieve academically. Without a firm and consistent discipline policy, none of what we imagine for our scholars can be achieved.
The Remote School experience for scholars will be one that is accessible to all learning styles, presents intriguing lessons and assignments, and is personalized based on a constant review of data. To achieve this experience, scholars will have a mix of live, teacher led, classroom sessions, independent work, and small group learning clusters during a teacher's office hours. These learning structures directly lead to a schedule that potentially will change every two weeks depending on the scholar's academic progress. Based on student progress, a student’s time spent in direct synchronous learning during office hours will vary. This ensures all scholars are getting individualized attention in the areas in which they need the most help or further progression. To complete their daily experience, students will have an advisory period that is based on success coaching and social emotional support.

Asynchronous learning in remote environments allows students to participate and complete work on their own time. Students receive materials such as readings, videos, and websites to explore from the teacher and submit work via email or Google Classroom by a given deadline.

Definition: Synchronous learning in virtual environments requires students to join a live classroom at a given time. Materials are presented through screen share features, videos, or presentation slides. Sessions can also be recorded to be reviewed at a later time.
