At Oxford Brookes Sport & Active Wellness, we believe that financial circumstances should never be a barrier to taking part in sport or physical activity.
To help make our opportunities more accessible, students who receive the eligible maximum Oxford Brookes Bursary (Home students) or Oxford Brookes Hardship Award (International students) can access additional financial support through two schemes:
Free Off-Peak Fitness Membership
Student Sport Membership Support Fund
Students can apply for either scheme individually or both together. Please see below the eligibility criteria.
These initiatives are designed to help more students move, improve their wellbeing, build friendships and feel part of the Oxford Brookes community.
Students in receipt of the maximum Oxford Brookes bursary or Oxford Brookes Hardship Award can apply for a free annual Off-Peak Fitness Membership.
Your membership is valid until 10 September 2027, regardless of when you apply during the academic year, and includes access to:
Gym facilities during off-peak hours (before 3pm on weekdays and anytime at the weekends)
Fitness classes during off-peak hours (before 3pm on weekdays only, doesn’t include Learn to Lift fitness classes)
Wellness Wednesday free gym sessions
Want to upgrade?
If you would like access during peak times, you can upgrade your membership by paying the difference between an Off-Peak and Anytime annual membership.
Annual upgrade prices for the 2026/27 academic year are:
Fitness Membership: £65
Summit Membership: £135
If you upgrade during one of our membership promotions (e.g. when we have 20% off in September and January), you'll benefit from any discounted upgrade prices available at the time.
To request an upgrade, please email sportsmembership@brookes.ac.uk and they will help you through the process.
Students in receipt of the maximum Oxford Brookes bursary or Oxford Brookes Hardship Award can apply for financial support towards the cost of joining an Oxford Brookes student sports club.
You can receive up to £100 towards your annual sports club membership.
For example:
Club membership fee = £60 → student receives £60
Club membership fee = £90 → student receives £90
Club membership fee = £150 → student receives £100
The funding is only available once per academic year, regardless of how many sports clubs you join.
If you have already paid for your sports club membership, you can still apply and receive the funding retrospectively.
Support is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the annual fund has been fully allocated.
Applying is quick and straightforward.
The application takes approximately 3 minutes to complete.
To apply for either scheme, you'll need to:
Complete our Sport & Active Wellness Bursary Support Google Form
Upload evidence of your Oxford Brookes Bursary or Hardship Award.
If applying for sports club funding, let us know the club membership you wish to receive support for.
Choose whether you would also like to receive the free Off-Peak Fitness Membership.
Once your application has been approved:
If you've applied for the fitness membership, we'll add your Off-Peak Fitness Membership to your Sport & Active Wellness account (or help you create one if needed).
If you've applied for sports club funding, you'll receive confirmation from the Student Sport team and be able to claim your funding through the Aspire system.
To be eligible for either scheme, you must:
Be a current Oxford Brookes University student.
Be in receipt of one of the following:
Oxford Brookes Bursary (£1,250) (Home students starting 2025/26 or later)
Oxford Brookes Bursary (£3,000) (Home students starting 2024/25 or earlier)
Oxford Brookes Hardship Award (International students)
Provide evidence of your award when applying.
