My research work focuses on teaching and learning in international contexts, either within the context of mathematics education or more generally in developing effective pedagogies. I have a particular interest in multilingual contexts.
Building on my extensive prior experience as a teacher educator and school improvement advisor, I have a number of roles here at Oxford Brookes University, including working as a senior lecturer in mathematics, as the academic lead for international CPD in the Centre for Educational Consultancy and Development and as one of the team that delivers multilingual learners CPD to international partners.
My current knowledge exchange projects including supporting Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Northern India (photograpghs below), to develop their early years initial teacher education programme. This work is supported by the Helga Todd Foundation ( Helga Todd Foundation ).
The photographs below show some of our activities during our first visit, where I worked with Akal University lecturers and the first cohort of early years teachers. We worked on planning for purposeful and creative math's activities using story books.
I am also involved with improving teacher subject knowledge, for both trainee and practising teachers. I am an active member of the executive committee for the National Association of Mathematics Advisers (Visit the NAMA site here ), where we organise CPD events and the joint NAMA/AMET annual conference. I am an accredited PD Lead and Standard Holder for the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM ). These photos reflect some of my workshop sessions, supporting the development of creative approaches to teaching mathematics.
I am currently working on a PhD, which is focused upon exploring the impact of translanguaging on the development of conceptual understanding in mathematics in multilingual contexts.
