A range of resources to support the development of School-Museum partnerships

What is the ‘My Primary School is at the Museum’ concept?

The My Primary School is at the Museum pilot projects tested the concept of locating a class in a museum or art gallery for an extended period of time – from two weeks to a half a term. This is a different, more immersive way of engaging schools, teachers, learners and parents than the one-off visits schools typically make to museums and galleries.

In this Toolkit, we call this way of working a ‘cultural residency’. The extended residency model can work in variety of cultural, heritage and natural environment settings from art galleries to castles, gardens to forests, from historic homes to religious buildings.

This Toolkit contains checklists and tools to help anyone who wants to build strong partnerships and genuine collaboration between cultural, heritage or natural environment settings and the schools and communities in which they are situated. Enabling you to put things in place and keep working well together throughout a cultural residency.

We would like to thank all the teachers and museum staff who generously gave ideas for this Toolkit and all those who have plunged into the deep end and tried a cultural residency for themselves
