The paper is entitled ‘The potential of extended cultural residencies for young children’, and draws upon contextualist perspectives of learning, seeking to address the research gap in understanding young children’s experiences of learning in a museum setting. It utilises the qualitative data generated from the evaluation of two of the museum-school partnerships to gain a deeper understanding of potential learning benefits of such experiences.

The paper illustrates how the two museum-school case studies indicate considerable potential for supporting language and communication skills in young children, as well as personal, social, and emotional development. The authors conclude that these outcomes appear to be linked to the rounded, rich nature of the experience in tandem with its extended duration which has resulted in a deeply child-centred experience and allowed for valuable learning within the museum environment.

The paper is available to read in full on Taylor and Francis here.
