A 8.5 x 11" emergency card is sent home with your child every September. If your student did not receive one, please notify me and I will provide one to you. This emergency card helps give the school nurse important information regarding your child's medical history, allergies, and emergency contact information so that you can be reached in the event of an emergency. It also includes your permission for the school nurse to administer certain over the counter medication to you child during the school day, if needed.

If your student has a change in their health status, if they are coming to school with crutches, a cast or other orthopedic device, or if they are starting a new medication please notify the school nurse at the information provided above.

As we move into the colder months, I want to share a few important health reminders and updates to help keep our students healthy and learning!

Cold and flu season is here!

Please remind your child to:

-Wash their hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available use hand sanitizer.

-Cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their elbow and wash their hands immediately after.

At times during the school year, you are faced with the difficult decision of whether or not your child is well enough to attend school. If your child has and of the following symptoms, he/she should be kept home until the problem has resolved or has been medically treated.

Please notify the nurse's office of any health incident. For example, contagious diseases such as chickenpox, broken bones, surgery, etc., in order to keep your child's health record updated.

As temperatures drop, make sure students come to school with warm coats, hats, and gloves. Label items with your child’s name to help return lost belongings.

Immunization requirement for students entering 7th grade

Students entering 7th grade are required to have both Tdap and MCV4 vaccines completed by the 5th day of the start of the school year in order to avoid being excluded from school.

If your student has not already received these vaccines, please make arrangements with your healthcare provider to have these vaccines completed.

If you do not have health insurance, please contact the Bucks County Department of Health at 267-580-3510 to schedule an appointment to have these vaccines completed, at no cost to you.

Proof of updated immunization records can be emailed or faxed to the school nurse at the information listed above.

The health office has started our State mandated health screenings. State mandated health screenings are routine checks that schools are required by law to perform each year to help identify potential health issues early. These screenings may include vision, hearing, height and weight, scoliosis, and dental checks, depending on your child’s grade level and state requirements.

These screenings do not replace regular check-ups with your child’s healthcare provider but serve as an important way to ensure all students can learn and participate fully in school. If a concern is found, families will be notified with recommendations for follow-up care.

If you receive a referral form for your child after any school screening or examination, it means that further evaluation by a professional health care provider is recommended. The referral form is to be completed by your private health care provider/eye specialist/dentist and returned to the school nurse as soon as possible.

Students are not permitted to carry medication of any kind while at school or in their book bags, except for EpiPens, inhalers, and diabetes supplies — and only if current physician’s orders are on file with the health office.

If your student requires medication to be administered during the school day, a Medication Dispensing Form must be completed by both the physician and the parent/guardian. This requirement does not apply to medications listed on the student’s emergency card.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires all students who are entering school for the first time, as well as those in grades 6th and 11th to have a physical examination on record.

Any student who does not have a current physical exam documented in their health record must submit proof of a completed physical by September 30th.

If proof of a physical exam is not submitted by September 30th, your student will be examined by our school physician at no cost to you.

If you plan for your student to be examined by your primary care physician but the appointment is scheduled after September 30th, please notify the health office.

Physical Exam forms are available in the school health office. To obtain a form, please call 267-599-2262, and we will be happy to provide one. You may also click here to download and print the private physical form.

In accordance with Pennsylvania School Law, dental examinations are required for all students in kindergarten or first grade, third grade, and seventh grade, as well as for any student who does not have a current dental exam documented in their health record.

These grades were selected because they represent important periods of growth and development in your child’s life.

If you choose to have your family dentist complete your child’s dental exam, please have them fill out the Private Dentist Report Form and return it to the school nurse.

Ticks can transmit illnesses, including Lyme disease, which is commonly reported in Pennsylvania. While not all tick bites result in Lyme disease, it is important to monitor your child’s health after any tick exposure.

If you remove a tick from your child, it is recommended that you record the date of removal. Should your child develop any early signs or symptoms of illness within 3 to 30 days following the tick bite, please seek medical attention promptly.

Medical Assistance/Health insurance for low-income families and children with disabilities

Medical Assistance (Medicaid) is a public health insurance program that covers children with disabilities as well as families who experience low-income.

Applying for Medical Assistance can be an intimidating task. To help ease this burden, the Buck County Intermediate Unit would like to assist parents/guardians in completing and submitting your child’s application for Medical Assistance.
