Time for us to evolve! Please support our virtual plant sale here, and our live plant sale at Firehall on Saturday, September 6th from 8 am.
Thank you for supporting Brewer Park Community Garden! We're transforming our former dome space into an Accessible Circle Garden that will accommodate gardeners with mobility issues and vision impairments.
We'll be updating the garden in two stages:
1) Repair: This fall, you'll see us replacing all the exterior wood on the Accessible Circle Garden (we'll repurpose the shorter, used planks to rebuild the interior of the garden beds). We'd also like to add entry sheds for tools, and mobility-friendly water access. After it's rebuilt, we'll be planning a pilot growing season and learning from it!
2) Rebuild: For this future stage we're envisioning rebuilding the space to be a fully accessible garden, with multi-level beds, better signage, smoother pathways, and more.
And you can help!
To raise funds for these repairs, we're holding this online plant sale. If you see a plant you like, please make a donation by Interac transfer to funding@brewergarden.ca (and then email funding@brewergarden.ca to let us know which plant you'd like and to arrange delivery or pick up!)
We'll also be holding a LIVE PLANT SALE on Saturday, September 6th at the Old Ottawa South Porch Sale! Come find us in the Main Hall of the Firehall between 8 am - 3 pm, where we'll be offering house plants and cuttings in return for donations to the Accessible Circle Garden.
What IS an accessible garden? At Brewer Park Community Garden, we're aiming to rebuild our former dome garden to become more accessible to folks with mobility and vision impairments in 6 ways:
Water access. Right now, all of the gardeners have to haul watering cans to and from our rain barrels to water our beds. If you're using a mobility device (or heck, if you just have a bad back), hauling water is impossible. Those cans weigh a LOT when they're full! We want to rebuild these beds to have water access at the turn of a tap.
Raised beds. Garden beds of different heights help accommodate everyone's needs, from folks in wheelchairs who need beds that swing over their lap, to folks with visual impairments who use vertical gardening to navigate! For now, we're starting with access to raised beds, but keep your eye on this one if we get a Trillium grant or a really generous donor.
Smooth pathways. For gardeners using mobility aids, or navigating canes, pathways help support safe and independent gardening.
Tool access: We want to offer small, light, easy to use tools, in tool closets everyone can reach. Our current tool shed is nice, but with most tools stored high, with no light, it is not accessible for anyone with mobility and vision impairments.
Signage: We want to put in high visibility signs for folks with low or reduced vision, so everyone can use our garden.
Seats: Gardening shouldn't be an endurance test! Let's give folks who need a rest (and all of us!) places to sit and work in our new Accessible Circle Garden.
We have a big vision for the future, and we're so grateful to our neighbours for supporting us!
