BPS Reopening Plan

2020-2021 School Year

BPS Reopening Planning Process & Updates

MA Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) Reopening Guidance

Continuum of reopening models:

Return without restrictions

Students return in-person and restrictions are lifted

1 - In-person learning with new safety requirements

Students learn in-person with new safety requirements.

Our goal for fall: to get as many students as possible back into schools for in-person learning - safely

2 - Hybrid Learning

Students learn both in-person and remote

Available in the event districts/schools are unable to bring all students back to school despite best efforts, or in case of COVID-19 related circumstances

3 - Remote Learning

Learning takes place remotely

Available for individual students who cannot yet return in-person and for all students in the event of future closures due to COVID-19

Across models 1, 2 & 3, all districts and schools need a plan for how special populations will receive necessary services and accommodations

Braintree Public Schools - School Opening Steering Committee & Working Sub-Groups

Overview

With the support of the BPS School Committee, the Braintree Public School (BPS) district has formed a School Opening Steering Committee. The committee has representatives from the Braintree teachers’ union, district administration, facilities management, Braintree Health Department and Public Safety Divisions, parents, and community members. In total, over 60 representative voices will help guide the district’s plan to reopen schools in the fall.

This committee is tasked with planning for the reopening of Braintree schools for the 2020-2021 school year. The steering committee meets weekly to review the development of the required DESE fall reopening models:

  • In-Person Learning

  • Hybrid (in-person & remote)

  • Remote Learning

Four working sub-groups have been established to provide guidance to the steering committee. Each group will provide recommendations for each reopening model and how to maintain equity and access throughout each model in the areas of:

  • Health & Safety

  • Facilities & Operations

  • Teaching & Learning (Elementary, Middle, and High School)

  • Special Education & Student Support Services

The Steering Committee will position the district to meet the two-step process which is being required by DESE. By July 31, districts must complete and submit a preliminary reopening plan summary to DESE. This form will allow DESE to collect key summary information about districts’ reopening models and other planning considerations.

Then, by August 10, districts must finalize their comprehensive plan documents, submit them to DESE, and release them publicly to their communities. The additional time between the preliminary plan and the comprehensive plan will provide districts an opportunity to incorporate any desired changes based on additional guidance DESE that may be released later in July.

Current Goals & Thinking

The Steering Committee and Working Sub-Groups are currently reviewing the following scenarios for reopening schools with either a Six (6) or Three (3) foot social distancing requirement - Scenarios noted below include plans for a Full-Return and Hybrid Options for particular grades.
