The Debates and Discussions club is a place where students can examine, explore, and extrapolate on a wide range of topics and issues. Students will develop debating and argumentative skills as they discuss concepts of philosophy and social & current events. Students will have the opportunity to think 'outside the box' and discover alternative approaches to philosophical concepts and ethical dilemmas. The Debates and Discussions club is a place where students will think about thinking, debate about debating, theorize about theories and philosophize about philosophy!
The Debates and Discussions Club is open to any and all students within the BrainBoost community who have a Club Pass. Students can attend regularly every week or even just attend on an ad hoc basis. Discussion topics will be posted in advance on this website and students are not required to have any previous knowledge or understanding of the topics raised or previous experience in debating. The club is open to anyone with a hungry mind and a Club Pass!
The Debates and Discussions Club will meet every Tuesday at 3:10pm in Pod Room A - the large classroom. The club will be facilitated by Paul, the Program Manager and run all year.
The Club will develop an agenda and timetable of upcoming topics which will be posted onto the "This Week in.." page of the club website. Students of the club can also forward ideas and suggestions to the Club Leader. The Club Leader will then ascertain the validity of the idea before including it onto the agenda for future discussion items and topics.
The Debates and Discussions Club will cover a wide range of topics, some of which could involve emotive or sensitive content that may affect certain individuals in different ways . Club members will be expected to treat subject matter with sensitivity and understanding, being respectful to the ideas and opinions of others. The Debate and Discussions Club will develop its own 'code of conduct' to guide the manner in which we allow each other a safe space to explore potentially challenging subjects.
There is no expectation that all students contribute to every discussion. Students are invited to contribute as little or as much as they want to the discussion or debate. If a student is uncomfortable with a debate topic they can talk to the Club Leader who will support them in finding a way forward that works for everyone. Students are not expected to attend every debate and discussion as they will have a Club Pass that allows drop in's and therefore non-participation as well.
