READ, LEAD, SUCCEED
READ, LEAD, SUCCEED
As students enter their secondary school years, reading starts to take on a different look. It is less about the learning how to read where we focus on decoding and fluency, and more about what we learn from reading. Our English Language Arts teachers engage students in a multitude of reading, writing, listening and speaking lessons. As a reading program, it is our role to support these. The reading classes give students the opportunity to practice skills with text and materials that compliment the ELA departments curriculum.
Part of our goal is to strengthen reading comprehension skills by creating an environment where reading is enjoyable. Too often at the adolescent age students start to "hate reading." As we all know, reading is everywhere and the better you get at reading complex texts the more you will succeed. So we read, lead and succeed!
How do we do this you ask? Well, the secret is to find ways that students can connect to the stories they read. Rudine Sims Bishop suggests "we provide students with books that are mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors." Sometimes we see ourselves in a book and sometimes we learn about others. Balancing these two types of stories helps make us well rounded, knowledgeable readers.
30 years ago I started my teaching career as a kindergarten assistant at Pine Glen Elementary School. Three short years later I was teaching first grade. Eventually, I moved to third grade and after 18 fabulous years, I left Pine Glen and came to MSMS. Currently, I teach students in all three grades and have been fortunate to work in the majority of teachers classrooms here.
Being a Burlington High Graduate, I love the town, the students and the community. We are so fortunate to have the support, creativity and genuine kindness here.
Personally, I am married with four kids of my own. They are between the ages of 25-20 and are well beyond their middle school years. However, they are my best resource for keeping me up to date on the interests of today's generation.
All About Me: Favorites: popcorn, country music, Wizard of Oz, pansy, pineapple, black raspberry chip, blue, 4, summer, beach, can't pick a book-so don't ask!:) :)
I am ALWAYS interested in what you are reading and love to take and give recommendations, so please don't hesitate to reach out for a book talk!
Hello everyone,
My name is Mrs. Feffer. I began teaching in 1995 as an ELA teacher at the Armenian Sisters' Academy in Lexington, MA. I then spent one year as a one-to-one inclusion teacher for the Dover Sherborn Regional School District and finally landed a full time classroom teaching position in Somerville, MA as a 6th grade teacher. I took some time off from teaching to raise my three daughters. Five years ago, I decided to return to teaching after being a stay at home parent for 15 years. It all happened rather quickly so in addition to learning how to function in this crazy situation, full of technological magic, I took on the role of a 7th grade Health Teacher for MSMS at the beginning of the pandemic. This year I’m so excited to be teaching 6th Grade Reading Strategies for the third year (and 7th grade Health again). This opportunity brings me back to my area of experience and expertise; working with diverse 6th grade students, developing language arts/reading skills, and guiding students with various levels of learning needs toward greater success!
Mrs. Pam Feffer
