A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

A good science leader ensures that all pupils can develop their understanding of the big ideas of science, and learn the skills needed to work like a scientist, because their teachers are confident practitioners who deliver an enquiry-rich curriculum with access to appropriate resources.
This leaflet provides support for a Primary Science Leader (PSL), based on good practice in schools that value science. It is aimed at helping PSL’s to reflect on current science provision and how to plan for improvement. Key areas discussed are:
• looking at, how science is led
• looking at different models for science leadership
• expertise required for the role
• development of curriculum
• resource provision and supporting colleagues.

“We’ve seen a real difference in terms of how children engage with their learning and particularly in them wanting to explore and learn more. I personally don’t think there is anything better to encourage fun, substantial and real learning.” Animations etc
