Books and Teaching Sequences, Power of Pictures

The Power of Pictures teaching sequences illustrate how to read picturebooks in the classroom, exploring how words and illustrations combine to tell a story and to share the creative processes a published writer goes through to create a narrative in words and pictures.

New Ofsted Framework

Are you up to speed with the new OFSTED Framework which comes into force this September? The new Framework places increased emphasis on the teaching of reading, with particular reference to reading for pleasure, application of phonics, fluency and comprehension:

"A rigorous approach to the teaching of reading develops readers' confidence and enjoyment in reading. At the early stages of learning to read, reading materials are closely matched to learners' phonic knowledge...they read widely, with fluency and comprehension." (EIF, p10).

Download the full Education Inspection Framework here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/education-inspection-framework

If you would like support with reviewing or developing any of these aspects of reading in your school, get in touch at lholmesconsultancy@outlook.com.

Support could include some or all of the following:

  • auditing reading material for early readers;

  • ensuring phonics is sufficiently applied within reading across the EYFS and KS1; -developing fluency and comprehension;

  • carrying out a reading audit;

  • creating a reading culture and promoting reading for pleasure.
