Students do not pass or fail the MAP Growth assessments. Rather, they earn a RIT Score. NWEA’s RIT scale stands for Rasch UnIT scale. There are specific RIT scales for various subject assessments (i.e. math, reading, language use, science). These RIT scales are stable, equal interval scales that use individual item difficulty values to measure student achievement independent of grade level.
The above charts shows examples of the kind of questions students encounter at various points along the RIT Scale.

NWEA has released updated MAP Growth Norms for the 25-26 school year. Essentially, norms are national averages based on how students across the country perform on MAP Growth Assessments. They tell us how a student’s RIT score compares to other students of the same grade and instructional season. The RIT score scale remains stable and unchanged, but the percentile ranks have shifted based on the new comparison group. More detailed information can be found in the Norms Toolkit.

The Item Selection Algorithm is a key component of the MAP Growth test engine, responsible for determining the specific question (item) to present to each student next. This algorithm intelligently considers a variety of factors and variables in its selection process. These include, but are not limited to, the student's starting RIT score, whether the student answered the previous item correctly, and the difficulty level of the items. By integrating these elements, the algorithm ensures that each question is optimally tailored to assess the appropriate type and difficulty of content. The enhanced item selection algorithm is designed to prioritize items that are closer to a student’s grade level when selecting items on the test. This will allow for stronger alignment to the Tier 1 instruction that all students are receiving. Click here to read the full-length product update.
