Any teacher can use a class challenge to address a particular behavior or to teach/refresh a routine. Keeps you and the students focused, honest and motivated.
Tracking how students meet a classwork completion goal.
Tracking how classes follow the Start of Class Routine at the beginning of the school year.
Suggestions for use:
Choose to track something that you think will have a big impact in your classroom. This could be something that will help you be more sane, that you think would help students learn more, or that you think would positively impact your classroom culture.
Use these any time of the year! Good for the beginning of year for establishing important routines, and for targeting problem areas throughout the year.
Make the criteria for the challenge really clear and simple.
Be straightforward and public - refer to the challenge, emphasizing the purpose, at least once/period so that everyone keeps it in mind. Report “results” without a lecture. (Ex. “Today, we were silent and focused for the whole period. Way to earn our point!” or “While many folks worked hard yesterday, a group of students did not complete their classwork, so we only hit 65% and that brought down our average.”)
Make sure the reward is something students want and is manageable for you. Something free that students often want is an extra 10 minutes at the end of class to hang out or start homework.
