Percent Composition Investigation
Choice 2: Determining the Percent by Mass of Sugar in Bubble Gum
(adapted from http://www.drvanderveen.com/CP%20%25%20composition%20of%20gum.pdf)
Objective: To determine the percent by mass of sugar in one piece of bubble gum.
Bubble gum is composed of mostly sugar. The most convenient way to remove the sugar from the gum is to chew it. While gum is being chewed, the sugar is dissolved by saliva and is swallowed, leaving an insoluble rubber substance in the mouth.
Materials:
1 piece of bubble gum
Electronic balance
Parchment paper or wax paper (to keep gum from touching scale or bench top)
You are responsible for turning in the following:
Note: Make sure you chew the gum for a reasonable amount of time allowing all the sugar to dissolve. Also, you want to allow the gum adequate time to dry because you do not want to include your saliva in the gum’s mass. AND remember to not let your gum come into contact with any surfaces that may have or have had chemicals on them. HAPPY CHEWING!
