Understand the main issues in AI Ethics
Analyze a few ethical frameworks applied to AI-related topics
Reading
Read before our class on Tuesday.
This week, we will talk about frameworks for analyzing ethical issues related to AI. As I said in the first class, we will not go into the philosophical details of each of the principles discussed. That would be another course altogether.
This first text is by one of the best-known technology ethicists, Luciano Floridi. He analyzes several studies on AI Ethics and compiles a list of five principles that, according to Floridi, encompass the fundamental aspects for thinking about ethical issues related to AI.
In class, we will do a brief formative assessment on the main concepts of the text, and with that, we will open space to think together about some case studies that can be evaluated based on these principles. Enjoy your reading!
Consider While Reading
What are the key ideas of each principle proposed by Floridi?
How do the principles complement each other?
Can you think of real-world AI issues that would be addressed by each of these principles?

Reading
Read before our class on Thursday.
In the second part of this week, we will delve further into the application of ethical frameworks. In line with our discussion in the first week about the course's focus, we aim to explore applied concepts that can be directly applied to current issues. In this text produced by The Alan Turing Institute, we will see a blueprint for applying AI Ethics. The next few weeks of the course will be organized around key concepts from this reading.
Consider While Reading
How do ethical principles enter into the cycle of developing new technologies?
What values and principles are proposed by the document?
How do the concepts in the text apply to the AIs you use today?
