SAFE PLACE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT
This June we are excited to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month at the Curley K-8 School. We celebrate Pride to acknowledge and affirm our students, families, and staff in the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride month began in 1969 when people led by transgender women of color fought back against targeting and abuse by New York City police officers. Every June in countries around the world, Pride celebrates the huge gains made in the last generation, and affirms each individual’s right to live and love as their truest selves.
Although we are in a place and time with rainbows in store windows all around us in June, remembering that the fight continues is a key aspect of Pride. From countries where homosexual acts are still punishable by death to New England states that are right now thinking of banning gender-affirming healthcare to anyone under 18, there is so much left to fight for, and the LGBTQ+ community can’t make the progress needed without true allies.
We know that representing all types of students and families throughout the school year is powerful. We ask that you take a moment this June to teach and learn about Pride, and to consider how we can ensure Curley LGBTQ+ students, families, and staff members are represented and affirmed in our school community throughout the school year.
Safe Place and Caring Environment
At SPACE, we create a safe environmet for students in grades 5-8 to explore topics that interest them related to identity. We also plan the pride picnic and other school wide learning opportunities and events.
