Number Talks: Use mental math strategies!!
2. Story Problems:
Ms. N has 3 strips of ten and 7 single unicorn stickers. She goes to Sticker Station and buys 2 strips of ten and 4 single unicorn stickers. How many unicorn stickers does Ms. N have now?
*To solve this problem, I need to first figure out how many stickers are 3 strips and 7 singles. I know 1 strip=10 so 3 strips =30 and 1 single=1 so 7 singles=7. 30+7=37.
Ms. N buys 2 more strips of ten=20 and 4 singles=4 so 20+4=24.
I can use the following equation to solve this problem:
37 +24=_____
*What strategy can you use to solve this? Show your thinking!
Try some more problems! Choose a strategy and show your work!
a. Ms. J has 4 strips of ten and 5 single rainbow stickers. She goes to Sticker Station and buys 3 strips of ten and 5 single rainbow stickers. How many rainbow stickers does Ms. J have in all?
b. Mr. A has 4 strips of ten and 1 single moon stickers. He goes to Sticker Station and buys 4 strips of ten and 8 single moon stickers. How many moon stickers does he have altogether?
3. Place Value: 3-Digit Numbers
What number is 2 hundreds 4 tens 7 ones?
*I know 2 hundreds=200 4 tens=40 7 ones=7 so 200+40+7=247
*I can also use a chart like this to help me:
What about 5 tens 8 ones 3 hundreds?
*I know 5 goes in the tens place. 8 goes in the ones place. 3 goes in the hundreds place. So 50 + 8 + 300=358
Now you try!! Complete the problems on the worksheet.
4. Math Fact Fluency: continue to work on xtramath!!
**Remember to use your mental math strategies when working on xtramath.
Assignment # 1
Listen to the story “A Letter for my Teacher”. We read this in our classroom at the beginning of second grade.
After reading, write a letter to your teacher. Start your letter with Dear or To and end it with Love or From. Tell your teacher about what you have been doing at home. What has been fun? What do you miss? Do you have any new or exciting news to share? After writing your letter take a picture of it and send it to your teacher. You can also practice typing your letter and email it to your teacher. We would LOVE to hear from you!
Assignment #2
Go onto readworks: https://www.readworks.org/
There are 4 new passages to read. Be sure to answer the questions after you read!
Assignment #3
Read a just right book from home or on Raz-kids. When you are finished use a separate piece of paper and complete the reading response paper below.
This week we will focus on two types of writing: letter writing and poetry! Use a blank piece of paper to do the following activities.
LETTER WRITING
First, listen to the story Dear Mrs. LaRue.
Then write a letter to Mrs. LaRue using this template as an example. Be sure to tell Mrs. LaRue what you think of Ike, what you think Ike will do next and some advice on how to handle Ike.
POETRY - April is National Poetry Month. This week we will focus on Acrostic Poems. Watch this short video to learn about Acrostic Poems.
Create an acrostic poem using your name.
-Use the letters of your name to describe yourself. For example, my name starts with M so I chose the word “mother”. I could have also chosen marvelous or memorable because they start with the letter “M”.
For example,
M - mother
E – enjoys reading
G - grateful
A – a good friend
N - never gives up
Now try to create acrostic poems for the words: FAMILY and SPRING. Have fun! When you finish, draw some pictures to illustrate your poems. Then send your teacher a copy of your poems.
1. talk 2. house 3. right 4. goes
5. July 6. world 7. something
Activity ideas to help you learn your words:
Try one or more of these every day that yu can!
REMEMBER: You can just use any paper that your family has at home.
1. Write your words in fancy letters!
Example: something
2. Write each of your words in a shape!
Try drawing other shapes and put words inside them!
How about a circle? How about a square? How about an octagon?
3. Write a storyabout your heart project! Use these words in your story:
house, world, something, talk
4. Write your words in ABC order!
Remember to use the alphabet to help you.
Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll
Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx
Yy Zz
Remember to start by looking for words that start with the letter a. If you don’t find any words that start with a, go to the next letter b. If you don’t find any words that start with b, go to the next letter c. KEEP GOING!
GLUED SOUNDS~ Let’s Practice
Point to each of the “glued” sounds below.
Practice saying each one three times- 3x
MAKING SENTENCES:
First, point to the “glued” sound in each of the words below.
Next, say each of the words that have a “glued” sound in them.
Last, write a sentence for the words below:
honk: ________________________________________________
bank: ________________________________________________
sang: ________________________________________________
told: ________________________________________________
****CHECK FOR CAPITALS AND PUNCTUATION****
**** ADD DETAILS TO YOUR SENTENCES****
WRITING CHALLENGE WORK:
If you want try to create acrostic poems using a family member, friend or your teacher’s name!
MATH CHALLENGE WORK:
Play Close to 100
Get a deck of cards.
Pull 5 cards.
Put together 2 two-digit numbers that make a total that is close to 100.
For example, I pulled these cards:
I can do 35 + 62 = 97
30 + 60 =90
5 +2=7
90+7=97
My score is 3 because I need 3 more to make 100. After 5 rounds, see what your total score is. The lower the score, the better.
**You can play by yourself or play with someone at home to see who can get the closest to 100 with the lowest score possible!**
Number Talks:
Look at the number strings. How can you solve it using the most efficient strategy?
18 + 22 + 30 + 24 =________
19 + 27 + 31 + 12=_________
25 + 22 + 25 + 13=_________
*Try to use mental math strategies such as adding all the tens first and then all of the ones to find the total.
Example:
11 + 22 + 19 + 15 =____
10 + 20 + 10 + 10 = 50
1 + 2 + 9 + 5 = 17
50 + 17 = 67
Story Problems
Mrs. MacDonald has 67 dog stickers. Mrs. Hale has 44 dog stickers. How many more dog stickers does Mrs. MacDonald have than Mrs. Hale?
*We are trying to figure out the difference between their amounts so we need to use this equation:
67-44=____
67-40=27
27-4=23
Mrs. MacDonald has 23 more dog stickers than Mrs. Hale.
*On a piece of paper, show your work using a different strategy. Use tens and ones or a number line to help you.
*You can also use 44 +_____ = 67 to figure out this problem.
It is a related equation.
*How can you solve it using this equation? Show your work on a piece of paper.
* Now, try on your own! Read the story problem carefully. Show your work using 2 different strategies.
Mrs. Mullins has 75 cat stickers. Mrs. Hazell has 53 cat stickers. How many more cat stickers does Mrs. Mullins have than Mrs. Hazell?
There are 84 Grade 2 students at the Condon School. There are 72 Grade 1 students at the Condon School. How many more Grade 2 students are there than Grade 1 students?
Place Value: Word Form for 3-Digit Numbers
*Read the word form for each 3-Digit Number and write the standard form for the 3-Digit Number on the line.
Use this chart to help you!!!
Example: one hundred twenty six= 126
One hundred fourteen=______
One hundred sixty two=______
One hundred ninety three=_______
Two hundred eighteen=______
Two hundred fifty six=______
Two hundred eighty five=______
Three hundred thirteen=_____
Three hundred ninety nine=_____
Three hundred twenty four=_____
*Now read the standard form of the 3-Digit Number and write the word form for each one on the line.Example: 265= two hundred sixty five
117=________________________________________
178=________________________________________
211=________________________________________
249=________________________________________
312=________________________________________
336=________________________________________
3. Math Fact Fluency - - continue working on xtramath!!
*Remember to use your strategies to solve math facts quickly.
Mental Math Strategies:
Put the larger number first and add on the smaller one
3+9=___ I know 9+3=12 so 3+9=12
Make a ten
8+5=___ I know 8+2=10 and 10+3=13 so 8+5=13
Use knowledge of doubles
6+7=___ I know 6+6=12 and 12+1=13 so 6+7=13
Reading Assignment # 1
Read a just right book from home each day. It could be one on Raz-Kids too! As you are reading, think about the Author’s Purpose. The author’s purpose is the reason the author wrote the book. There are 3 reasons why author’s write stories. See the posters below.
After reading your story write down the author’s purpose and include clues from the text that make you think that! For example, The author wrote the book we have all heard “Have You filled a bucket today?” to persuade you to make good choices and to be kind to others. I know this because in the story the characters had full buckets when they did or said kind things to others. Full buckets make us feel good and happy. When someone was not kind, they dipped into someone’s bucket and that person’s bucket was not full because they were sad. Use the organizer below to help you write the author’s purpose after reading stories this week!

Math Game: Greatest 3 Digit Number
Find a deck of cards.
Pull 3 cards.
Rearrange the cards to make the greatest number possible.
I know 8 is the greatest digit and if I put it in the Hundreds place, it would make it larger than 2 hundreds. 3 is the next largest digit so I can put that in the Tens place because 3 tens is greater than 2 tens. Last, 2 is the smallest so I can put that in the Ones place.
Give it a try!!! You can even play with someone at home!!!
STORY PROBLEMS
23+ _____ = 39
EXAMPLE
Mrs. Hale had 23 colored pencils. She bought SOME more colored pencils. Now she has 39 colored pencils. How many more colored pencils did she buy?
In this problem, we are looking to find out HOW MANY MORE we need to get from 23 to 39. We can start at 23 and count up to get to 39.
23+10=33
33+6=39
We added 10 and 6 to get to 39 so the answer is 16.
23+16=39
We could also use subtraction 39-23= ______
39-10=29
29-10=19
19-3=16
39-23=16
NOW YOU TRY!!
Write your own story problems for the following equations. Solve the problem and show your work.
A. 41 + _____ = 70
B. 38 + ______ = 65
2. EXPANDED FORM
Watch the following video to review what we have learned about expanded form.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AF7xj7pmWc
Expanded form is when you stretch out a number and write an addition equation showing the value of each digit based upon place value.
For example, the expanded form equation for 375 is 300+70+5 = 375
In this number the 3 is worth 300, the 7 is worth 70 and the 5 is worth 5 ones.
Now you try!
Look at the following numbers. Write them in expanded form.
Send a picture of your work to your teacher!!
3. Math Fact Fluency
Continue to go on XtraMath and practice your math facts!

Raz-Kids- Don’t forget to read stories on Raz-kids. Contact your teacher if you need support! Teachers will be checking online to see what books you are reading and can send you bonus points and messages for working hard with daily reading!
We have been writing some autobiographical stories in Writing Workshop. An autobiography is a story about your life. It is a story about events that truly happened in your life. Create a Timeline of your life. A timeline shows events in sequence or order.
*Feel free to add more Past, Present, or Future events! It doesn’t have to be just one event for each.
You can tell important events that happened in the past, important events that have happened recently, and explain events that will happen in the future. For Past, it could be about something that happened when you were 3 or 4 or 5 years old, something from Kindergarten or 1st Grade, anything you want! For Present, you can include something from this school year in Grade 2. For Future, maybe you can include what you want to be when you grow up, or tell about something you hope to accomplish! The ideas are endless!
Use can use an organizer like this:
2. Choose one of the events from your organizer (past, present, or future) from the previous activity and tell more about it. Don’t forget to include information that tells who, what, when, where, and why so that your story is complete.
Remember, when talking about the past, you need to use verbs that end in -ed and be sure to spell irregular verbs correctly that don’t follow that spelling rule. For example:
When talking about the future, be sure to put the word “will” in front of your verb. For example, I will graduate from high school.
When you are finished, make sure you have used:
Correct Capitalization (How do you start a sentence?)
Correct Punctuation (How do you end a sentence?)
Correct Spelling (Have an adult help you if you need help)
***** Challenge Work! *****
Illustrate your story!! Use markers, crayons, colored pencils, or whatever you may have at home to draw pictures that match your story. Include as many details as you can!
Share your story with someone at home. Be sure to read and reread your story throughout the week!
Continue working on any writing pages in your packet!
Word List:
1. pretty 2. great 3. together 4. city
5. head 6. son 7. Saturday
Activity ideas to help you learn your words:
*Write each word daily ( 5-10 times)
You know what works best for you!
*Write your words in full and complete sentences.
~Add exciting information and details to your sentences.
~Ask yourself:
*Does my sentence start with a capital letter?
*Does my sentence end with punctuation? (. ? ! )
*Does my sentence sound right when I read it back to myself or my family?
*Write a story that includes three or more of your words!
*Read your story to someone in your family!

Give your child a handful of coins that total less than $1.00. Have your child find the total. Write an equation and show how they got that total. Next, ask them how much more money they would need to have $1.00?
(Reminder: Quarter = 25 cents, Dime = 10 cents, Nickel = 5 cents, Penny = 1 cent)
For example: 3 quarters, 1 dime, and 3 pennies
Part 1:
25+25+25=75
75+10 =85
85+3=88 cents
Part 2:
88+ ____ = 100
88+2 = 90
90+10 = 100
So 88 + 12 = 100
You would need 12 more cents to have $1.00
*Counting coins is a great second grade math skill to practice often!!
We just finished our +10 facts. Your child should be able to add 10 to ANY number. Quiz them! See if they can add ten to the following numbers: 32, 45, 68, 71, 86, 90.
Be sure to go on XtraMath to continue to practice your math fact fluency!!
Each week we’ll include some work with story problems. Feel free to have your child make up and solve additional story problems (addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers with solutions up to 100).
A. 42+36 = _____
B. 89-52= ______
Ask your child to make up a story problem to match each equation listed above. Then he/she should solve the problem and show his/her work.
Story Problem Examples:
A. Mrs. Hazell’s class had 42 Husky Paws. They earned 36 more Husky Paws. How many Husky Paws do they have in all?
B. Jackson had 89 Mickey Mouse stickers. He gave 52 Mickey Mouse stickers to his friend. How many Mickey Mouse stickers does he have left?
Be sure to complete a few math pages from the packet this week
Independent Reading Assignments: Students should be reading independently for 30 minutes each day. Students may read books from home, books online, stories from Raz-Kids, or stories in any work packets sent home. Also it is still important even in Grade 2 that students are listening to stories read by adults or older siblings.
For this week, after reading a story students should complete the following activities:
Retell the Story- Tell the story in your own words. Be sure to only tell the most important parts of the beginning, middle, and end of the story. You may tell the story to a family member, stuffed animal, or even write your retell on paper.
Fluency- Read the story again. This time read for fluency. Make sure you are reading at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow.
Draw a picture of your favorite part of the story. Write 3-5 sentences that explain what is happening in this part of the story and why it is your favorite.
