Aleks Harkavy is in her first year as Choral Director and Strings Instructor at Parkway High School. A native of Chicagoland area, Mrs. Harkavy graduated from DePaul University in 2014 with a BM in Music Education and is excited to be entering her fourth year as a high school choral director.
Most recently, Mrs. Harkavy taught at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, FL, and Lincoln-Way North High School in Frankfort, IL. She has also previously taught at Warren Township High School and Niles West High School. During her teaching career, Mrs. Harkavy has taught several curricular choirs, music appreciation classes, guitar, madrigals, vocal jazz, a cappella, gospel choir, show choir, and even directed and conducted a full-length musical. She is passionate about incorporating diverse musical styles and music literacy into the choral classroom and helping students reach higher levels of musicianship and artistry.
During her time at DePaul, she was actively involved both in and out of the School of Music. She served as Choral Librarian for 4 years and as President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the DePaul Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Mrs. Harkavy performed with DePaul’s University Singers, Concert Choir, DePaul Symphony, Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, and DePaul A Cappella, serving as section leader her senior year. She is also a graduate of the DePaul Honors Program, through which she presented her thesis, “Romantic Nationalism in the Art Songs of Selected Slavic Composers” at the first Honors Research Conference at DePaul in May 2014.
Mrs. Harkavy has been frequently performing in addition to her teaching engagements. A classically trained soprano, she has performed in several solo and ensemble settings. For the past two seasons, Mrs. Harkavy has performed with Pensacola Opera in their productions of Aïda, Dead Man Walking, and Madama Butterfly. She has also performed works such as Handel’s Messiah with Choral Society of Pensacola, presented a solo recital featuring the works of master composers such as Handel, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, and Rossini, and took home 3rd Place in the Folk Solo Category at the 2011 Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod in Wales, UK.

Mrs. Harkavy resides in Bossier City with her husband, Max, having just celebrated their wedding in December 2017. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time knitting, doing needlework, sewing, baking, woodworking, renovating her new house, and catching up on the latest shows on Netflix. She is excited to meet all the students, parents, and staff at Parkway High School and is looking forward to having a great year!
