Mindfulness = Being Present
What does it mean to be mindful? To be mindful means to be present, or aware of everything around you. The sounds. The smell. The taste. How your body feels. It is realizing all of the senses of what is going on right now.
If you become anxious, angry, upset, or just overwhelmed - try thinking about:
What do you see?
What do you hear?
What do you feel?
What do you smell?
Thinking about these things will help you to organize your thoughts and bring you back to RIGHT NOW. It can help you not to react in a negative way. It can calm you down. It can also help you to stay focused on what is important. It can also keep you from saying or doing something you might regret later.
A couple of mindfulness exercises
When the ball collapses, take in a deep breath . . .
When the ball expands, blow the air gently out of your mouth.
Imagine you're walking alone outside.
You find leaves all over the sidewalk.
As you're walking, what do you hear? How does it sound? What is he air like? What do you smell?
Imagining these things, experiencing these things, calms your mind.
