One of the things that help make relationships is having things in common. Whether that be shared experiences, shared hobbies, or liking the same movie star . . . having similar qualities makes us want to be around those people.
Showing EMPATHY is when you try to see something from the perspective of someone else.
Imagine you're on the playground and you see a student trip and fall. Everyone around her starts laughing. Except you. You don't laugh. You don't find the situation funny, because you've tripped and fallen before. You remember how humiliating that was to have everyone laugh. You walk over and help her up and ask her if she's okay. That's showing empathy. You understand being in that situation and you show support instead of laughing.
