weekly update 9/20/19

Back to SChool NIGHT

We are thankful to all of our parents that were able to join us at Wednesday's Back to School Night. A hallmark of the Boonton community is the extraordinary support shown for our town's students and its schools. That was on clear display on Wednesday night and has been a consistent driver of the success that we have recently enjoyed. We look forward to building our partnership in the year to come as we continuously work toward our school's goals of enriching the lives of students and empowering our students to be impactful citizens.

We also understand that many parents maintain busy schedules and may not have been available to join us on Wednesday. If you would like to view our introductory presentation, it has been included in this update. And if you have any questions pertaining to our initiatives, our progress as a school, or the learning experiences offered in our students' classrooms, please contact us or your child's teacher any time.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT 2019

GIRL SCOUT TROOP 96407's efforts toward bronze award benefit jhs and lead toward special recognition

This past spring, our local Girl Scout Troop 96407 began working toward their Bronze Award and decided to devote their efforts toward making an impact at John Hill School. When considering aspects of our school, they identified a desire for an improved means of acquiring drinking water based upon their personal experiences and a survey of their peers. The Girl Scouts then conducted research about the potential benefits of a water filling station as an alternative to our traditional water fountains. Identified advantages of a water filling station included a decrease in exposure to germs, a decrease in water spilling from students awkwardly trying to fill bottles in traditional fountains, environmental benefits from an increase in use of reusable water bottles, and even increased academic performance as students would be more inclined to drink water which would improve hydration and capacity to focus.

Students then scheduled a meeting with Mr. Valle to offer an especially well-prepared presentation of the benefits of a water filling station and the desire to have one installed at JHS. The members of Troop 96407 were then provided the challenge of identifying potential water filling station models and the costs associated with acquisition, installation, and maintenance. In very short time, a full cost estimate was provided and onsideration of how to make a water filling station a reality at JHS immediately ensued!

Shortly thereafter, word of the Troop's work spread to the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. The MCMUA was so impressed by the Troop's efforts in pursuit of waste reduction at John Hill School, that Liz Sweedy, District Recycling Coordinator, invited them to attend a luncheon where they will receive an award for Environmental Excellence on Friday, October 11th. We are truly proud to have this Girl Scout Troop representing our school community and grateful that their efforts have set the course for the addition of a water filling station at JHS soon!

COUNSELORS' CORNER

Mrs. Maier and Ms. Brady have started classroom guidance lessons. Lessons this year will focus on many skills that comprise social emotional learning such as good character, communication skills, problem-solving, goal-setting, conflict resolution and many more. Our goal is to promote positive coping skills that allow each child to reach their full potential and contribute to making John Hill School a place where every student feels welcome and comfortable in the pursuit of academic, social and emotional success.

JUNIOR BOMBERS TAKE FLIGHT ON THE HOCKEY AND SOCCER FIELDS

John Hill Students have started the fall season on a strong note as they represent our school on the athletic fields. The Field Hockey Team started their season with a 5-0 win over the Pequannock Panthers. The Kittatinny Cougars were their next opponent, who they defeated 6-0. Today, the team is hoping for a victory over Frelinghuysen of Morristown to end the week. Next week, the Hockey Bombers will take on The Harding School away on Tuesday, Roxbury on their home field on Wednesday, and Central Parsippany on the road on Friday.

In soccer action, The Girls Soccer Team has had an enthusiastic start to the season and is quickly growing and learning together. They have improved in each of their two games thus far and are looking forward to this afternoon when the Girls Soccer Bombers host Kinnelon at 4:00. Next week the girls will have home games on Tuesday versus West Essex and Wednesday vs. Mount Arlington.

The Boys Soccer Team opened the season 1-1 and most recently scored a hard fought victory over Delbarton. Next week will be a busy week for the Boys Soccer Bombers with games on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The Tuesday game is at home at the high school varsity baseball field.

We are extremely proud of our Junior Bombers!
