weekly update 11/7/18

YOUNG engineers emerge in the classroom

Over the past few weeks, elementary students have been engaged in a variety of STEM-based and fun-filled activities!

For example, a group of 3rd graders were challenged to design a "creature catcher" while only having access to specific materials. Students then put their imaginations and resourcefulness to work as they embraced the challenge of assembling their designs and sharing their final products.

4th graders have been studying the properties of sound and hearing. Some were tasked with the challenge of building a prototype for a hearing apparatus to be used during a nature walk. Students studied like devices, hypothesized, brainstormed, sketched, and eventually built their apparatus. Design specifications required that the device be light enough to wear with no battery power to assist.

5th grade students have been busy conceptualizing and sketching plans for a pumpkin catapult. Students are now in the phase of gathering materials to assemble these devices. Assembly is scheduled to occur next week with pumpkin launching soon to follow!

middle school math teachers present @ AMTNJ conference

Mr. Smulewicz and Mrs. Perez had the privilege to present at The Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey Fall Conference. They spoke about how to provide review and remediation in the classroom within each lesson. The teachers provided resources to the conference attendees on how they could improve classroom understanding and discussions.

JHS Receives "Safe Routes to School" Recognition

John Hill School was recently presented with a certificate from the "New Jersey Safe Routes to School" program to recognize our community's efforts to encourage safe walking and bicycle riding to school. Mr. Jentzen, a representative from this program, visited JHS on Tuesday to present us with this recognition. We owe a lot of thanks to our students and families for working together to ensure that our students arrive to and from school in as safe a manner as possible!

CHampions for kids

At John Hill School, we are privileged to witness staff members going above and beyond to meet the needs of students on an every day basis. In an effort to recognize some of these extra efforts, we have instituted a "Champions for Kids" program through which staff members recognize their peers for the extraordinary impacts they make at JHS. This year's champions have included Mrs. Perez, Mrs. Hughen, and our latest champion, Mrs. Maier. Congratulations champs and thank you for all your efforts!
