Welcome Back

Dear School Street School Families,

I am so excited to be with you and your children again. Our first few days of school have been a success. The children are getting to know their new teachers and friends. They are spending time learning the daily routines and building strong classroom communities. The tone for the entire year is established during the first few weeks of school. Our teachers are slowly and thoughtfully building a solid foundation and laying the groundwork for a productive year of learning.

Mrs. Schessler

The kindergarten team welcomes you and your children to the 2019/2020 school year. We look forward to partnering with you to offer your children an exciting fun-filled year of exploring, learning and growing together. This week novice kindergartners got acclimated to their new environment; routines and expectations were practiced and discussed. They also met all of their special area teachers. Students have the weekly opportunity to attend Technology classes, Music, Physical Education, Art and Library. Our "Read Alouds," which focused on making transitions, helped us to recognize that it is quite natural to feel nervous or apprehensive when facing new situations.

Please be sure to mark your calendars: Back to School Night is next Thursday, September 19th at 6:30. Attendance is very important as this is the time that you will learn more about our curriculum and the specifics of your child's class. See you then!

First Grade

Welcome back to a brand new school year. The first grade classes have been busy getting back into the swing of school routines. We are reviewing old rules and learning new ones. We are excited to see our old friends, as well as meet new friends, too. We are getting accustomed to our new teachers, classrooms and changes at School Street School. Our teachers are looking forward to meeting all of our parents at Back to School Night next Thursday, September 19, 2019. They have so much to share with you! Mrs. Pourki is asking that anyone who has not sent in a palm-sized smooth rock to school, please get them in as soon as possible so that we can begin working on our rock garden again. Please be sure to check homework folders daily, as well as Friday Folders every Friday. Thank you for a smooth opening to the new school year.

This week Ms. DeMaio's class worked hard on creating self portraits. Some students are learning colors while others are reviewing. All of the students were able to look at their clothing, name a color they saw and use that color crayon to design in their own unique way!

Second Grade

We are off to a great start in second grade! This week we established our classroom routines and procedures. We enjoyed getting to know our new classroom families! We are reviewing our reading and writing habits to get ready to launch workshop next week. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 19th at 6:30 for Back to School Night!

Getting to Know One Another

Building Reading Stamina

Music Class with Mrs. Cunningham

Students listened to the story All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman and explored extensions to the story. We brainstormed many ways of greeting each other in a multitude of languages and with gestures. The greetings were brought into a movement activity using music from The Netherlands, a folk dance called Boanopstekker. Ask your chid to show you what they did!

Students are beginning to build their movement vocabulary too. They are coming up with wonderful words describing their movements and are taking some VERY interesting walks around the room. Second graders are refining their reflection skills through our Notice, Value, Wonder time following activities. This is only the beginning of more beautiful things to come! Thank you for sharing your children with me in music class and as always, if you have a song, dance, or instrument from your own family to share, please reach out! It’s best to contact me by e-mail for any reason at elisabeth.cunningham@boontonschools.org
