John Hill School

WEEKLY UPDATE 6/14/19

John Hill's Got talent

John Hill School held their end of year talent show. Song and dance filled the JHS gymatorium as the students starred on stage. This year's top acts included Sydney Davis singing the Addams family song Happier and Cassidy Davis singing the song Popular from the broadway play Rent. The runner up was Sadie Coughlin who did the Animaniacs 2018 version of the Presidents Song and the winner was Prisha Shah who performed to a classic Hindi dance remix. Congratulations to all of our contestants!

8th graders reflect with guerilla haiku

The 8th graders wrapped up their year with an assembly that had them reflect on their time at John Hill School. The students embarked on a school wide scavenger hunt where they had to write positive Haiku messages with different members of the school community. The goal was to engage and communicate with as many people as possible and document their adventures with photos. The slideshow of their adventures can be viewed here. A special thank you to the PTA for putting together this event.

7th graders learn about frog anatomy

Mrs. Crithary's science classes examined the external and internal anatomy of frogs. The students observed the different systems in the amphibians and reviewed the life cycles of these creatures. They were also able to review the different organs and how they function in the frog's body.

BAYER CORPORATION BRINGS STEM TO GRADE 5

Volunteers from Bayer Corporation joined our 5th grade classrooms this week to provide a variety of STEM-based learning opportunities for our students. Students enjoyed progressing though these learning activities and putting their knowledge to work as they saw scientific principles in action. Bayer has been a superb supporter of our school the past couple years and we are sincerely appreciative of having had the opportunity to welcome their volunteers as members of our learning community once again this week.

BHS Students teach JHS students financial Literacy

On June 11th, students from Boonton High School visited our 4th grade classrooms to teach a financial literacy lesson. The high school students included Junior and Seniors in the Gateway Program or the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club. These students were trained by NJ's Junior Achievement to present a lesson designed for elementary students to learn more about personal finance and money. It was a thrill for our 4th graders to learn from their guest teachers for this event and we are sincerely appreciative of the time and efforts provided by our BHS friends!

5th GRADE EXPLORES THE SHORE

5th graders ventured to Sandy Hook on Friday to learn about the ocean habitat and ways in which humans play a pivotal role in protecting it. They actively took part in cleaning the bay of debris and then ventured to the ocean-side to explore oceanic life. The provided a wonderful opportunity to be caretakers of nature, to serve our state, and to enjoy an early taste of summer!

PRESCHOOL STUDENTS VENTURE (ON A GIANT YELLOW BUS!) TO TURTLE BACK ZOO

The Jr Jr Bombers enjoyed a perfect day to explore wildlife at the Turtle Back Zoo! The trip served as a culminating activity for a highly successful year of transitioning into our new preschool program at JHS. Next year, we look forward to welcoming 3 additional preschool sections to our school!

BTL STUDENTS PARTAKE IN ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

This week, Bridges to Learning students competed in the duct tape challenge by creating impressive pieces of art using boxes, duct tape, and their imagination! Picture are some highlights of the students' work.

BOONTON BLOOMS GARDEN GROWING STRONG!

This year, students participating on the JHS Green Team, individuals from our 7th grade enrichment classes, and other homerooms throughout the school helped our Boonton Blooms Garden flourish! Over the summer months, campers from the Boonton Recreation Summer Camp will mostly be tending to the garden, but we could use some help watering on weekends and in the month of August. If interested in having your family volunteer, please contact Mrs. Crithary (jennifer.crithary@boontonschools.org).

SUMMER PACKETS SENT HOME

As we enthusiastically welcome the coming summer months and the added recreational time that they bring, we also recognize the importance of keeping our minds intellectually engaged and our academic skills sharp. That is why each grade level has provided summer packets for students to engage with throughout the summer months and to return to school in September. These packets have been sent home in this week's Friday folders. Should you have any questions about the summer packets, please contact us.
