What's Happening at School Street School?

Kindergarten

This week during Reader's Workshop we practiced retelling familiar stories. Partners gave a summary of a story chosen from their book baggie using transitional words including: first, next, then and finally, or, at the end------. This skill is an important one and will be visited next year and throughout your reader's language arts classes. To practice this skill at home, read a familiar story and encourage your child to sequence the most important events using the transitional words mentioned above.

Our 100th Day is nearly upon us! On Wednesday, February 12, we will share our collections of one hundred items. On Thursday, we will celebrate Valentine's Day and exchange cards! We look forward to a fun, busy week at SSS!

First Grade

We have all been busy becoming experts in the nonfiction topics we are reading. We are then transferring our new knowledge into teaching readers through our nonfiction writing books. We are exploring the work of other authors to model in our own books...chapters, table of contents, introductions and conclusions. Our mathematicians are using place value skills to make models and use a hundred chart to add tens and ones. Our scientists are using what they know about sound to explore how sound can communicate messages over distances. We are also working on wrapping up a unit on Neighborhoods and Communities and beginning a new unit on Maps and Globes. If your child does not know his/her address, now is the time to learn it!

Our Running Start Reading Program is in full swing. In week 1 we read a combined total of 501 books. In week 2 we read 618 books. That means we have read a combined grand total of 1,119 in just the first two weeks! Every first grade student should be reading at home daily. Please help your child to complete their homework by making sure they are reading and by signing their paper sneakers. Two sneakers may be handed in each day, with the exception of Monday when six sneakers may be turned in.

Please join the first grade classes in welcoming Mrs. Melione back to School Street School. We are so happy to have her back with us!

Second Grade

This week in second grade, the students began to break apart 3-digit addends. We are really starting to add up big numbers and we are using all the skills we have learned so far to help us. In reading, we are working with reading partners, reading the same books so that our partners can talk about the story, clarify tricky parts, and ask questions for better comprehension. Our writing goal this week is to improve our writing, and make it more powerful by trying out craft moves that our favorite books use.

My Little Artists

We have been focusing on the artist Henri Matisse. He liked to use lots of shapes and colors. Students divided their paper into sections which created 2 walls and a floor and filled them with patterns. In the center of the room is a table with something on it.
