Unified Arts (UA) are classes that students take in addition to core classes that allow for variety in their day. In 6th grade students are required to take physical education that includes a healthful living component. Band, Chorus, and Orchestra are yearlong courses that require a student to make a yearlong commitment to be in that class. For more about the music programs please click here. Sixth grade students can sign up for a music program but will not select their UA courses. They will be randomly sorted into their UA classes based on numbers. A description of our current courses are below. Our UA classes are ever-evolving to provide our students with the best and most innovative classes.
Art
Students explore an art form, obtaining knowledge in that form to plan and create
individual works of art based on such knowledge, while following and breaking from traditional conventions. Students examine the language, materials, media, and processes of that particular art form and the fundamental processes of artistic expression supporting a work.
Community Service
This course equips students with essential life skills and fosters community engagement through hands-on projects. Students will develop personal, social, and civic responsibility by learning skills like communication, public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, and financial literacy. The community service component involves local projects, allowing students to apply these skills, build connections, and make meaningful contributions to society.
Computer Literacy (Technology)
This course covers beginning keyboarding skills. Emphasis is on the touch system, correct techniques, and development of speed and accuracy. Upon completion, students should be able to key at acceptable speed and accuracy using the touch system.
Students will also learn basic coding such as Python and Javascript. Introduction to basic programming concepts, such as algorithms, syntax, loops, and variables, through the engaging and familiar experience of a video game. In each level, players use computational thinking and computer programming to navigate the hero to the goal without running into spikes or being spotted by ogres.
Design and Modeling
In this course students look at real world problems and learn how to design solutions. Students will complete projects which includes making things. This class involves a lot of cooperative learning groups. To be successful in this class students need to be able to work with others and solve problems. This course uses solid modeling to introduce students to the design process. Utilizing this design approach, students understand how solid modeling has influenced their lives. Design and Modeling is an 18 week course and takes up two unified art spots.
Fitness
This class is an extension of Physical Education and Health. Students will get a Health class as well as a Physical Education class each class (about 35-40 minutes each). Students will learn about more topics in Health that are not covered in the regular Physical Education/Health class. Students will continue learning about fitness and exercise concepts in Physical Education as well as apply their improved physical literacy to games and challenges.
Middle School STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics)
This class is a chance for students to work collaboratively on challenging problems. Groups of students will be given a problem or challenge for which they design their own solutions. Emphasis is placed on hands-on and group-oriented learning while also hopefully having fun.
Physical Education/Health (Required)
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn through a comprehensive sequentially planned Physical Education program. The emphasis of this course is to provide students with the skills, knowledge, attitude, and confidence to be active for a lifetime.
Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in fitness/conditioning activities, individual/team sports and recreational activities. Students will learn to define, describe, and identify how physical education contributes to optimal development of physical, mental, emotional, and social health.
Practical Living
Classroom experience with “life skills” such as cooking and sewing. Within these areas we bring in science, math, ELA, world cultures, & healthy habits.
These classes are subject to change year to year due to staff availability and student preferences.
