Early College
Boone County Early College program is for Juniors and Seniors at Boone County, Conner, Cooper, and Ryle High School. Students will spend half of their day taking courses at Gateway Community & Technical College Boone Campus. These courses are taught by faculty from Gateway, NKU or Thomas More. The first years curriculum is a prescribed curriculum for students to complete--students will only be in classes with other Boone County students.
The sequence of classes for Early College year one are listed here.
Transportation will be provided to and from the school.
Some support is provided by an on-site school counselor at Gateway, Ronda Dawson--There is also an on-site Academic Advisor at Gateway for the Early College Students.
Early College Students can still take high school classes at Cooper for the other half of their day and could be on a path to earn an Associate's Degree if interested.
Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment program is where some Classes are offered during the course of the school day on Cooper's campus, some classes online or on NKU's campus can be allowed via counselor or CCR coach approval.
If taking courses at Cooper, courses will be everyday M-F for one semester.
If approved for online or on campus courses, this option offers more flexibility of classes--can take classes needed for your major. There is also a wider variety of General Education courses. Students can take courses during the day, evenings, online, whichever you want.
Transportation is NOT provided.
There is no support provided by counselors at the college, students are essentially on their own---I can always provide tutoring options and support from Cooper if requested--but nothing from the colleges.
Students can still take high school classes at Cooper---there is no prescribed set of dual credit courses to take--they can chose the amount of dual credit courses they take in a semester.
If interested in Dual Enrollment please see the teacher for the application.
Information for whichever path you choose
The ACT will not be a requirement to take Early College/Dual Enrollment anymore, however, if you choose to take some higher level Math or Science courses they will need ACT scores for enrollment.
Students will work with individual universities (NKU, Gateway, Thomas More) to register for their courses. Students MUST have a full schedule which means a total of 6 courses (high school credits) for the year between Cooper courses and Dual Enrollment courses. Students are required to take at least 1 dual enrollment course per semester.
Students are required to supply a copy of their college schedules for spring and fall semesters to their counselor. College courses will be added to their Cooper schedule upon receipt of the college schedule.
Courses taken through Dual Enrollment will be calculated into the Cooper GPA at a 1.04 index on a 5.0 scale and will appear on the Cooper transcript as well as the college transcript.
Dual enrollment students will follow the college schedule as far as days off are concerned. For example, if Boone County schools are closed or on a delay, students will be required to attend their college courses as scheduled unless the university is on delay or closed
Students are not permitted to take more than 4-5 courses through Dual Enrollment per semester.
Students are beginning their college transcript and GPA--this GPA will follow them to their college of choice after high school.
Choose courses wisely and take them very seriously.
Classes count towards general education requirements, as well as, requirements for the associate's or bachelor's degree. The courses are weighted and will transfer to any Kentucky public two-year or four-year college.
