Art contains an element that allows for expression of ideas. It has become a way for me to relax and de-stress. The flow of a brush or pen becomes almost natural as you begins the process and in the end a blank material is completely transformed.
In the exploration of Eastern culture in my own life as an Asian American, a deeper understanding of myself and my heritage was gained. I began my investigation by researching traditional Chinese techniques such as for inks. As I followed my inquiry, this flowed to emotions and modern subjects prevalent in my own life. For example, in one painting, a popular street in Flushing Queens is shown where Chinese vendors sell their exotic fruits such as longan in the lively atmosphere. In another pieces, more complex emotions are conveyed in both conflict and wonder, encasing these complex emotions many Asian Americans experience when they are young with their cultural identity. I revised for a more interesting composition so viewers can picture a story and added more depth in both texture and color. This was most evident in my acrylic painting pieces of the flying cranes. In the painting of the girl in blue, I used textures and colors in the background to make a surreal environment where someone is emerging. I end my investigation on a piece mourning and celebrating Asian lives within the context of the pandemic.
