Art is my therapy, as it stays a way for me to relax, enjoy myself, and cultivate a sense of independence. I love how art is a way to express myself when words cannot suffice.
Why do societal pressures distort our self-perception and femininity? As a young woman growing and maturing, I have noticed, and been subjected to, the gender divide and societal expectations women face today: whether that involves disparity within the labor force, how women should look physically, or emotional challenges young girls endure. I believed it was important to investigate and shed light on these unrealistic standards, as they have the ability to deteriorate one’s self-esteem and distort one’s self-image. I have used my artwork to address and research these topics such as body image, sexual abuse, and mental illness. By experimenting with a variety of materials (paint, colored pencils, and charcoal) and different techniques, I am effectively able to convey a range of emotions and perspectives. I investigated my own past and revised pieces to more directly incorporate my experience with gender roles and stereotypes, and their effects. By pushing the boundaries and pursuits imposed on women, the purpose of my portfolio is to allow women to have the voice and the confidence they need to be comfortable with, and love themselves.
