Situated near an old, abondoned mine camp south of Breckenridge, this site offers a jaw-dropping view of the Ten Mile Range peeking over the trees. It also has a pond, stream and waterfall feature to truly round out the natural backdrop.
What we love about this site:
Panoramic mountain views.
Available year round.
No fee.
Relatively easy to access for most. Parking is within a 5 to 6 minute walk to the site.
Mostly known only to locals, this site is usually fairly private.
There's also a pond and waterfall nearby where we can take you for additional photos.
Potential drawbacks of this site
It's non-reservable, so you have to take what you get when you arrive. It may be in use.
Parking is limited.
Requires a high-clearance, 4-wheel drive to access in winter.
Accessibility
Parking is on the side of a paved road, and the site is just a short walk from parking. In the winter, the road to get here does require a four-wheel SUV with good ground clearance (such as a Jeep Wrangler, Ford Explorer, Chevy Tahoe, Dodge Durango, Toyota FJ Cruiser or similar).
Vehicle type: for winter, make sure your vehicle has good ground clearance to get over snow, as well as 4-wheel drive for potential ice. For weddings held between September 1st and May 31st, note that Colorado has strict traction laws in place that affect what type of vehicle you are allowed to drive in the mountains. If you are planning a Colorado mountain wedding between these dates, please thoroughly read this blog post so you'll be driving the right type of vehicle. (Don't rely on the car rental companies to fill you in on this; our experience is that they don't.)
Access from parking: Accessible for most. Site requires walking over uneven ground. It may be challenging for those with mobility issues. It's at 11,000 feet in elevation, so would not be suitable for anyone with respiratory difficulties.
Additional Logistics
Dogs: allowed on a leash.
Bathrooms: none.
Suitable for children: yes. Make sure someone is holding onto the little ones hand as there is a danger from unsafe mineshafts and highwalls as well as wildlife.
Max vehicles accommodated: 10.
Max number of guests at this site: 20
Type of site: Public/Nonreservable
Dates of Availability: year-round. In the winter, you and your party will need snowshoes.
Elevation: 10,700ft (3,261m) above sea level.
This site is not reservable--it's open and free to the public. However, it's also a lesser known site. Regardless, please read this article about the (slight) risk you run when having your wedding at a non-reserved, public site.
