This is one of our lesser-known, hidden gems. Nestled at the foot of Mount Lincoln, the site offers lots of trees, a waterfall, lake views and even the remnants of an abandoned mining operation (that make for unique photo backdrops!).
Accessed by a dirt road that can get a bit washboard-y at times, four wheel drive isn't a must, but it's a good idea. The site is available for weddings from early June through early October (i.e. post spring-thaw and pre-fall snowfall).
What we love about this site:
Panoramic mountain views.
Offers both lake and waterfall backdrops.
Relatively secluded.
No fee.
Lake is easy to access.
Potential drawbacks of this site
It's non-reservable, so you have to take what you get when you arrive. It may be in use.
Limited parking. (Room for 3-4 cars at the falls. Lakeside has more parking.)
Falls require walking up a dirt path for 2-3 minutes and over some flat rocks. It won't work for anyone with mobility issues.
Accessibility
Parking: The lake has parking for 10-12 cars. The falls site has limited parking and can't accommodate more than 4 cars. Remember: your officiant and photographer will occupy two parking places
Vehicle type: for winter, make sure your vehicle has good ground clearance to get over snow, as well as 4-wheel drive for potential ice. For weddings held between September 1st and May 31st, note that Colorado has strict traction laws in place that affect what type of vehicle you are allowed to drive in the mountains. If you are planning a Colorado mountain wedding between these dates, please thoroughly read this blog post so you'll be driving the right type of vehicle. (Don't rely on the car rental companies to fill you in on this; our experience is that they don't.)
Access from parking: For the lake, it's a less than one minute walk over sand. For the falls, it's a 5-minute walk up a slope, through some trees and then over some large flat rocks.
