Grade Range: This class is open to 9th - 12th grade.
This class requires a good foundation in Algebra I as these skills will be utilized frequently in the labs and lessons.
Becky will lead a 30-week, live interactive Chemistry course for students in grades 9-12, using Discovering Design with Chemistry which is a college-preparatory high school chemistry course designed for students who have successfully completed Algebra I. Although the text is not secular it is presented as appreciation for the creator rather than a focus on doctrinal debate.
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles of chemistry, including the classification of matter, atomic structure, spectroscopy, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, physical and chemical changes, stoichiometry, solutions, gases, acid-base chemistry, oxidation-reduction reactions, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium.
By integrating scientific concepts with mathematical applications, the course teaches students to think critically and analytically like chemists while developing a deeper understanding of the changes and interactions that occur in matter.
The text includes 46 hands-on experiments that reinforce key chemistry concepts through both quantitative and qualitative investigations and students will average three experiments every two weeks.
Lab supplies needed: items found at home, glass kit and lab kit will need to be purchased separately. Students attend twice weekly live classes that includes direct instruction as well as lab experiments. Classes are recorded if a student needs to miss a session, though regular attendance is strongly encouraged for the best experience.
Students are expected to participate using a microphone and webcam to help create an interactive, supportive classroom environment. Class sizes are kept small, with a 10-student maximum, to ensure each student receives individual attention.
This course includes meeting 30 weeks, twice weekly, 55 minutes each session.
Total Class Fee: $240 per year
In total, students will attend 60 classes (90 minutes each). This breaks down to just $4 a class,$8 per lesson, and includes lesson planning as well as grading of all assignments.
In addition to the instructor’s fee, this cost also helps cover the tools and resources needed to run the course, such as Google Workspace, course material, instructors guides, and other necessary lab supplies.
Class fees can be paid in three installments for your convenience. A nonrefundable deposit is due in June to reserve your child’s spot in class. The remaining balance will be divided into two equal payments, each due three weeks before the start of the semester. Please note that payments become nonrefundable after the listed semester due dates. You are also welcome to pay the full balance at any time.
