This theme traces the journey of African Americans from the inhumane labor of enslavement to their pivotal roles in shaping industries, advancing labor rights, and breaking barriers in the highest levels of leadership.

The City of Bloomington commemorates National Black History Month with a tribute and celebration to empowerment. The theme for the 2026 Black History Month celebration is “A Century of Black History Commemorations”. This month serves as a powerful reminder of the legacy of perseverance and progress forged by African Americans in the face of systemic challenges, as well as an opportunity to reflect on their immeasurable influence in building the foundation and future of our nation.
The event will feature a showcase of local Black talent and entertainers who will share their creativity and performing arts for Black Americans. The evening will begin with a reception at 4:00 PM, followed by the program at 5:00 PM.

This event will feature a coalition of organizations, black-owned businesses, black creators, and artists and create a space that affirms persons of color in the community, and provide a medium for local talent, business owners, and groups to share information and sell goods. The Black History Month "Black Market" pays homage to the original Black Market that was firebombed on December 26, 1968.

Poster Board Contest & Reception
Parents, teachers, siblings, friends, and community members are invited to join us at City Hall Council Chambers to celebrate and honor the winners of the 2026 Black History Month Poster Board Contest. Awards will be presented to winners at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Come show your support for these talented young scholars and celebrate their hard work and creativity. Refreshments will be served.

The signature event, the Black History Month Gala, will be held on Saturday, February 28th, 2026. Location: One World at Woolery Mill. The Reception and Silent Auction begins at 6:00 p.m., with the Program at 7:00 p.m. The event will feature dining, dancing, and recognition of the 2026 Living Legend recipients, along with the Commission on the Status of Black Males' Outstanding Black Leaders of Tomorrow. Tickets will be available beginning Monday, December 01, 2025 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater or online at bctboxoffice.org or by phone at (812) 323-3020. The City of Bloomington 2026 Black History Month Calendar is a free publication of the City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department. The City of Bloomington 2026 Black History Month Calendar lists events sponsored by the City of Bloomington Black History Month planning committee and community partners to share events. Members of the community are encouraged to submit events for inclusion in the calendar related to Black History Month. Please review the following information for usage.

Visionary Leader Award
The Black History Month Visionary Leadership Award is presented to a person or persons who inspire others through their long-term vision for the betterment of the community. Visionary leaders are innovative, persistent, willing to take risks, enthusiastic, focused and willing to listen to others. Visionary leaders are not afraid to get their hands dirty but but bring others on board through their goal setting and communication.

Marcus Debro is a distinguished educator, sports official, and community leader, with deep roots in Bloomington, Indiana. Born and raised in the city, Marcus has dedicated much of his life to serving his community. He is married to Kathy Duckett, and together they have built a strong foundation in both personal and professional endeavors.
With an impressive career in education, Marcus retired from the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) after 29 years, 23 of which he spent as an Assistant Principal at Bloomington High School North. His leadership and dedication to the students earned him numerous accolades, including being named an "Educator of the Year" by the Greater Bloomington/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce.
Marcus has also made significant contributions to the local sports scene. A standout athlete during his time at Bloomington North, Marcus helped lead the school’s basketball team to a sectional title in 1979. He later went on to play at Keene State, where he remains second all-time on the school's blocks list. In addition to his playing career, Marcus officiated seven IHSAA basketball state finals (four girls, three boys), earning respect as a skilled and fair official.
In recognition of his contributions to sports and the community, Marcus was inducted into the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame as a contributor. His work extends beyond athletics, as he is also the vice president of Volunteers in Medicine of Monroe County and serves on several local boards.
His passion for service and leadership continues to shape his life, inspiring others with his simple but powerful message: "To make a difference in someone’s life, you don’t have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful, or perfect. You just have to be there."
A dedicated advocate for community development and education, Marcus served on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Commission for several terms, contributing to the celebration and legacy of Dr. King in Bloomington.
Marcus Debro's life is a testament to the power of dedication, leadership, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. Whether on the basketball court, in the classroom, or in his community service, Marcus continues to inspire those around him.

The Commission on the Status of Black Males (CSBM) Outstanding Black Leaders of Tomorrow Award is given annually to two African American men and women, respectively from the following categories: high school and adult. The Outstanding Black Leaders of Tomorrow Award is presented each year at the Black History Month Gala Celebration in February. The CSBM recognizes the importance of highlighting the outstanding contributions made by young African American men and women in our community for their outstanding leadership, scholarship, and involvement.
