Core Principals/Writing in Mathematics

My core principals as an educator are to:

• Ensure engagement from all students

• Establish a rigorous classroom where students are being challenged

• Create a writing intensive classroom

• Have a warm and positive classroom culture

In mathematics, it is necessary that students need to be able to communicate their mathematical thinking.  This ability to communicate mathematically is a critical focus of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards as well as the New Jersey State Learning Standards.  Students will learn different strategies in this class to strengthen their ability to verbalize and write about their mathematical thinking.  Some of the strategies include:

• Reflection

• Word Webs

• Word Box

• Sort and Label

• Explain a Process

• Finding and explaining an error

• Justifying a Solution or Process

• Use of Sequence/Transition Words

• Predicting an Outcome
