Hi! My name is Irene Cohen and I'm a Design and Modeling teacher here at BMS. This will be my 26th year teaching at the Middle School. I hold Bachelor's Degree in Science (K-8), and a Master of Education Degree from Cambridge College.
When I'm not teaching, I love to exercise, paint pictures, explore perfumery, and spend time in New York City with my family.

Design and Modeling Course incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) which has become an essential educational initiative across the nation. Through the use of the engineering design process, students are encouraged to explore and discover through modeling and are provided with opportunities for experimentation. Student creativity and risk taking are emphasized in a design and problem solving format that implements meaningful hands-on activities in an encouraging environment.
In Design and Modeling Course students use tools such as the design process, a dynamic mathematics software, a computer-aided design program, computer simulations, an engineering notebook, and a 3-D printer to design, model, and build objects.
Design and Modeling provides students with opportunities to apply the design process to creatively solve problems. Students are introduced to the unit problem in the first activity and are asked to make connections to the problem throughout the lessons in the unit. Students learn and utilize methods for communicating design ideas through sketches, solid models, and mathematical models. Students will understand how models can be simulated to represent an authentic situation and generate data for further analysis and observations. Students work in teams to identify design requirements, research the topic, and engage stakeholders. Teams design a toy or game for a child with cerebral palsy, fabricate and test it, and make necessary modifications to optimize the design solution.
