CVTC HS Academies

High School Academies are a series of courses that lead into a degree program. Academies are designed to meet high school needs with broad goals of offering program exploration, a recognized industry credential or embedded technical diploma, or up to a full semester of an associate degree program. High School Academies can be offered at a CVTC campus or at the high school location. Academies may include any combination of Transcripted Credit or "Start College Now" course sections.

Accounting

​CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer high school students who are interested in accounting, an opportunity to earn college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful and individualized career path.

Students who successfully complete all three courses will earn their Technical Diploma while they are in high school. Courses will be taught in the evening at CVTC Business Education Center and are also available online. Students can choose to attend face to face, online, or a combination of both, based on works best for their schedule.

Certified Nursing Assistant

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming high school juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC's technical degree programs and transfer to other universities. By successfully completing this 120-hour course and passing the CNA Certification Test (written and skills), students will have the credential to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

Students will prepare for the Wisconsin Certification exam. The nursing assistant course is a prerequisite for many associate degree health programs. There are many jobs opportunities for CNAs.

College Transfer

​CVTC, along with your school district, has partnered to offer incoming seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college, the opportunity to earn two full semesters of college credits. This academy is being offered both face to face and virtually online to allow students from various locations to participate. Students must be highly motivated and committed to all 10 courses throughout the school year.

Cosmetology

Chippewa Valley Technical College's Cosmetology program prepares students for the field of Cosmetology by teaching methods to apply salon sciences with artistic talents, for creative results. Students will gain a complete understanding of salon operations - from marketing and retailing to hygiene and communication skills. This career provides excellent opportunities for full-time and part-time employment and attracts creative people of all ages. The possibilities in this occupation are unlimited and so is the income potential.

Beginning students learn classroom theory and fundamental skill development. Students will then apply their skills in the state-of-the-art salon where they perform client services including: shampoos, hair colors, hair styles, facials, scalp treatment, manicures, pedicures and chemical services. Class attendance is critical for successful completion of this program, which consists of six 8-week sessions meeting in the 1,550-hour requirement for licensure. Our goal is to train and educate highly respected entry level cosmetology professionals. Individuals interested in this field should have a strong interest in personal appearance, have artistic flair and enjoy working with people.

The Cosmetologist program includes theoretical and practical instruction to develop skills in the following areas:

•Basic and specialty haircutting

•Ethnic hair care

•Chemical Services

•Manicure, pedicure, and nail enhancements

•Facials, makeup artistry, and color analysis

•Hair designing and styling

•Salon Sciences

•Salon operations and management

•Retail sales/marketing

Emergency Medical Technician 1/EMR

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer students who are at least 16 years old and interested in pursuing a career in healthcare an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC programs and transfer to other colleges. Students who successfully complete EMT1/EMR will have the opportunity to complete their Emergency Medical Responder Certification.

General Studies

​CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer students general studies courses as an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized academic and career pathway. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to the CVTC Liberal Arts Transfer Program. The academy courses listed below will be taught online. Please note that online does not mean self-paced. Assignments, discussions and assessments will have specific due dates. Face-to-face support will be available one hour per week in the summer with additional support provided as needed.

Heating, Air Conditioning, & Refrigeration

CVTC along with your school have partnered to offer high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in HVACR (Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC's technical degree programs.

Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers, often called HVACR technicians work on heating, ventilation, cooling and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. HVACR technicians work mostly in homes, schools, hospitals, office buildings, or factories.

Intro to Health Information Technology

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer students entering grades 9-12 an opportunity to take courses and explore what health information technology is all about. Students will learn the technical aspects of managing patient information, supporting electronic health records, organizing & trending patient data, and examining healthcare law as it pertains to the protection, access, disclosure and privacy & security of patient information. Students interested in healthcare and working in a medical facility that enjoy working with other people, organizing data, and working with computers would be an excellent fit. Students who complete these courses could be hired in the medical field as a medical office, health unit, or appointment coordinator after completing the academy. All courses are available online to offer flexible scheduling to meet diverse student schedules and needs. These courses are part of our Health Information Management & Technology Associate Degree. It is recommended that students successfully complete medical terminology before enrolling in this academy.

Intro to Industrial Electricity

​CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer students entering grades 9-12 an opportunity to explore a variety of ways electricity is used across the Chippewa Valley to move products we buy on Amazon and locally that depend on industrial electricity. Students will engage in hands on, interactive labs on equipment used by local employers such as Nestle, Walmart, Menards Distribution Center, Midwest Manufacturing, JD Manufacturing, Ashley Furniture, Gold N' Plump, and Bush Brothers. Faculty can connect students with local employers looking to hire skilled workers. Students will be introduced to industrial electricity utilizing both classroom and lab experiences, including electrical systems and controls. Students will also learn concepts of component selection, power transmission application, failure analysis, and predictive maintenance techniques in a hands on lab experience.

Intro to Library Services

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in libraries, museums, or information agencies an opportunity to earn college credit. High school academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy can be applied to CVTC's Library & Information Sciences program.

Library employees today have more opportunities than ever before in a variety of different library settings. They are often one of the first place people go for technology help, career exploration, and trusted information. If you have strong organization and customer service skills, enjoy working with people and technology, then explore CVTC's Library & Information Services program. Courses will help you gain the skills needed for a career at a public library, non-profit, school, or government organization.

Intro to Teacher Education

​CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming sophomores, juniors, seniors who are interested in the educational field, an opportunity to earn college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful and individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy can be applied to CVTC's Foundations of Teacher Education Associate Degree.

Education is a dynamic and ever-changing career field. Learn about the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of education. Explore issues and trends in elementary, middle and secondary institutions including WI and national regulations, fundamentals of teaching methodologies, learning styles, and basic assessment techniques. Students will also gain experience in creating and using web tools and online classroom techniques. This academy also provides an overview of special education law, societal responses to students with disabilities and the impact of family dynamics.

IT - Software Development Specialist

​CVTC and CESA have partnered to offer high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the IT field an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC's technical degree programs. Students enrolled in this academy will focus on the exploration of resolving software-based computer problems in today's digital office environments.

Machine Tool

​This year-long afternoon academy begins a student's preparation for employment in CNC programming, CNC machining, CNC operation, mold making, and quality control inspection. Students will earn 16-18 credits in CVTC's Machine Tooling Technics program and will be one-quarter of their way to a technical diploma, and earn an industry recognized credential. This academy is held in the afternoon at CVTC's Manufacturing Education Center, which gives students a great feel for what it is like to be a student at CVTC.

This program is great for students who have good mechanical skills and enjoy building or crafting items.

Students will learn the following:

  • operating industrial-sized manual machine tools – including engine lathes, milling machines and grinding machines

  • precision tolerances with machine tools

  • the process of chip removal and applied physics

Courses can be applied to UW-Stout Industrial Management and Career and Technical Education Training programs.

Residential Construction

​CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in construction the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits successfully earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC degree programs and transfer to other opportunities.

Any student that completes both the Construction Safety course and Youth Apprenticeship is eligible for CTE Technical Incentive grant funds.

Sate Certified Firefighter 1

​CVTC has partnered with local school districts to offer high school students who are at least 16 years old the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Students will explore principles of fire fighting alongside local firefighters, engage in hands on firefighting experiences and participate in a live burn. Students will connected with volunteer fire fighters and be able to apply as a volunteer fire fighter. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC FireMedic program. Students will take the Hazardous Materials Operations Responder, and Firefighter 1 Practical Skills Review courses. They will also sit for the State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter 1 exam and earn credit toward the FireMedic Degree.

Truck Driving

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in Truck Driving an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC programs.

Truck drivers are professional drivers who deliver goods between locations. Local truck drivers move goods from terminals and warehouses to factories, stores and homes in the area. Skilled drivers maneuver trucks into tight parking spaces, through narrow alleys and up to loading platforms. This program offers training in local truck driving. Students experience classroom lessons and exercises with the semi-tractor/trailer.

The program has three start dates during the year: August, January, and July.

Welding

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in welding the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits successfully earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC Welding programs. By successfully completing all four courses, students will earn a Wire Feed Welding Certificate (Intro to GMAW). All of the academy courses listed below will be taught at the UW-River Falls welding lab by CVTC instructors during the school year.

Students enrolled in this academy will learn about welding safety, basic welding math, welding print reading, and wire feed welding processes.
