Tips and tricks: how to get good grades as a freshman, plus advice from a teacher
OPINION | November 2024
As we continue in the school year and tests are occurring, it is very important to get strong study tips that work for you. Most experts recommend using routines, active learning strategies, taking understandable notes in class, and having breaks throughout your studying time.
Freshman Kate Splonskowski said, “I've always thought routines were important. I try to study and do homework as soon as possible. Doing homework right away helps me not forget what work I need to do and stay focused on school.”
Good grades can be very challenging while also enrolled in extracurricular activities such as sports and clubs. Many ways to keep your grades up while being in extracurriculars include getting work done on time, communicating with teachers, and having a planner. Splonskowski said, “I maintain good grades while in extracurriculars by prioritizing grades over other activities. Sometimes it can be difficult to balance both, but I've seen that taking breaks works good for me.” Century has many studying groups, such as math club and English club, and during your lunch break. Many teachers are happy to help tutor you!
English teacher Erin Hehr said, “Students are more successful when they are organized. Being organized helps to ensure that deadlines are met and homework is completed. It also prevents the need to look for something. Organization is necessary for time management.” Organization is more than just having a clean backpack and folders. It also Includes notes, worksheets, and Google Docs. Most students study better when they’re in a clean, quiet environment, which prevents distractions.
One of the most controversial topic in studying distractions is cell phones. Hehr said, “Students are not successful when they study with their phones nearby. In my experience, students spend more time on their phones than studying. Phones are one major distraction, and I believe studying with any distractions is not beneficial.”
Another important aspect of studying is finding how you learn best, so you fully understand the material that was given to you. Repetition is also huge, so you aren't up for hours on end before tests. Hehr said, “Students who review materials regularly learn the material better. The more repetition, the better. Getting into the habit of reviewing early in your high school career is beneficial.”
Century started adding a new score to students' report cards called “career and college readiness,” which essentially gives students insight to how career and college-ready they are.

She currently works at the Bismarck Gymnastics Academy. Petryszyn said, “I love my job. In her free time, when she is not working, you can find her hanging out with her family, cleaning, or watching TV.
