Dear Parents,
As September comes to a close it is perhaps time to pause and reflect on the first month back at school.
Now that our assessments have been completed, we look forward to meeting you during our parent/teacher conference to discuss goals and targets for the coming months.
We are also excited to share our collaboration with Real Madrid and we look forward to see our students having fun in channeling their energy and skills in a positive and productive way.
Our Forest School initiative is also taking root and we are excited to anticipate the further developments taking place on site. Ms Lloyd will be sharing further information in due course.
On a practical note, we have several events taking place in October: the Autumn Festival week beginning the 17th October rounding off with our Halloween event.
With best wishes,
Natalia Ambridge
EYFS
Miss Lynne: EYFS1
What a great start we have had in EYFS 1 Fish class. All the children have been working hard and having lots of fun. Investigating, painting and printing, mark making and playing in the garden. A wonderful way to start the year!
Miss Lauren: Reception
We have had a wonderful start to the term in Reception! We have explored the Botanical Gardens and made lots of pictures, we even made our own paintbrushes using twigs, leaves and feathers! We loved playing with water and we decided to wash all of our toys! Our first lesson in Music was wonderful and we had the opportunity to learn about pitch and tone and use lots of musical instruments!
Year One
Miss Katrine: 1D
The Flamingo (1D) and Toucan (1S) Classes have been learning about our five senses as a part of our Science topic 'Us and Our Senses'. The children had a chance to test their different senses through some fun experiments, including a smell test and a task where they were blindfolded and had to use their listening to help them assemble a picture of a human.
Miss Lizzie: 1S
Year Two
Ms. Verralls: 2V
In Science, Year 2 has been learning about habitats. We have learnt about plant and animal habitats around the world. During Discovery Time, we went into the Botanical Gardens and designed a habitat for a creature in the gardens. We made sure it provided the creature with protection, shelter and the right conditions to live. Some of the habitats included- nests for birds, shelters for snails, ants and insects. Lizards were also catered for with shelters and habitats too.
Ms. Aycan: 2A
Year Three
Mrs. Robbins: 3R
The Mathematicians in 3R are working in teams to sort beans into hundreds. The students are building number sense to prepare them for estimating groups of hundreds.
Ms. Adesanya: 3A
Students in 3A made flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe with both acrylic paint and coloured paper during art lessons. The results were beautiful!
Year Four
Ms. Lincoln: 4L
We have spent time in 4L getting to know each other, playing teamwork, building games and learning how to work really well as a team for the year to come. Also maths games where writing on the tables has been the best part!
Ms. Newman: 4N
The expanded KS2 choir has now been launched! We are rehearsing every Monday during our after school club and will prepare for more performances in assemblies to students as well as end of term performances to parents. Keep an eye out for opportunities to sign up to the choir and for upcoming performances, for example, the ‘Winter showcase’.
You can view our previous performances here.
The year 3/4 choir has been involved in an exciting worldwide singing event - Sing Up Day 2022. Every year since 2010, the ‘Sing Up’ organisation has set aside an extra special day to celebrate the power of song. Every summer they commission a brand new Sing Up Day anthem and on 29 June this year, singers all over the world celebrated Sing Up Day. Over 33,000 pupils in 154 schools performed Beccy Owen's uplifting pop anthem, 'Love as our guide', across 15 countries and 4 continents. We sent our video of the choir singing the song and ‘Sing Up’ performed some video magic to put all the videos together into a Digichoir, in order to showcase all the wonderful singing that goes on around the world. You can view this year’s Digichoir video here (can you spot the BISI choir?):
4N Students enjoyed reading some new books in their classroom library!
Y3 and Y4 Students during our weekly Primary assembly.
Year Five
Ms. Lloyd: 5L
Year 5L students have been working this week through the Symmetry unit in the Maths Cambridge Curriculum and developing their conceptual understanding by exploring reflections through the four quadrants. They did this by folding paper and pressing paint to create their own unique symmetrical patterns. Here are some of their examples. They have also inquired into triangles which tessellate, producing beautiful wall art depicting their designs. Tessellation means the shapes fit together perfectly without any gaps.
O.W.L (Outdoor Woodland Learning) ECA
I am a semi-trained Forest Schools Leader at B.I.S.I, and I am proud to offer our students', a new ECA called O.W.L (Outdoor Woodland Learning ECA). The first session was held after school last Tuesday and consisted of games and woodland knowledge together with an activity to build shelters for woodland animals. The information attached explains our philosophy and the photos show our students engaged in an inquiry based learning experience. I hope that in time more students will embark on the Forest Schools journey. Email Miss Lloyd for more information k.lloyd@bisistanbul.org

Year Six
Ms. Cosnett: 6C & Mr. McCann: 6M
House Captain Results
The year six children have been working extremely hard since the start of term preparing their house captain election campaigns. They thought carefully about the qualities they possess which will help them to support the younger children; they also thought about improvements that they would like to make to our school.
With all of their ideas in place, the year six children then produced eye catching posters and recorded persuasive speeches in preparation for the voting that took place last week.
It is with great pleasure that we announce our new House Captains and Vice Captains for 2022/23!

A huge congratulations to all of our House Captains and Vice Captains - well done!

If you have any questions about Music class, please email Mr. Dennison at s.dennison@bisistanbul.org!
Music in 3B
During the first week, students are all showing off how they can play multiple rhythms at the same time, while playing different instruments, singing a song, reading special musical notation, and moving around the room to give everyone a turn playing all the instruments. Wow, 3B!
Music in 6M
In one the first Music classes, 6M worked together in small groups to create eight and sixteen beat body percussion ostinatos, then after a few minutes a few groups even performed for the class. We challenged ourselves, may have made a few mistakes, but we already started working together to create fun and meaningful music. Great job, 6M!
Languages
Mrs. Gwilliam: ESL
ESL September – International
In ESL, KS2, the new children are settling down well as the beginners from last year move up to the next level. More writing for them, yes, but we still have time for talking and learning through a range of enjoyable interactive ESL activities. In the pictures you can see the new students doing a walk about to get to know people and places at school. They drew some lovely pictures of their teachers! Year 3 are sequencing pictures to write a story in a little book. Year 6 are working on their writing. Well done to all for a good start to the new academic year!
