Dear Parents,
As we near the end of the year we celebrate our students’ achievements. We had a wonderful Art Week and Exhibition. Our students had the opportunity to showcase their talents to the school community. As I look back we have had some disappointments, most notably the external cancellation of our Year 6 Space Camp trip. However, our school community has exhibited great resilience and support for one another. Currently all viable alternatives are being considered. Thankfully, we have some lovely family events planned and we look forward to welcoming you all to our Summer Fete which will round off a productive and enjoyable academic year.
With best wishes,
Natalia Ambridge
Art Exhibition: All About Me
by Zoe Cosnett
The start of May brought with it a wonderful sight – the EYFS and Primary pupils held their first art exhibition and the corridors and classrooms were filled with a dazzling array of artistic creations. The theme of the exhibition was ‘All About Me’ and featured some extremely creative self-portraits in which the children’s personalities and artistic talents were revealed for all to see. The exhibition included large collaborative projects, interactive activities as well as individual work. It showcased many pieces of unique artwork including ceramic tiles, outdoor art made from natural materials, mix and match swiveling puzzles, sculptures and lots more.
Mother Tongue Drama ECA
Mother Tongue Drama – Cinderella
To continue to raise awareness of the importance of the different languages in our school we ran a Mother Tongue Drama ECA club. The children translated the play into their languages, learned their lines and rehearsed diligently. The play was Cinderella, the traditional version followed by a modern version. We invited all of Primary to watch the show, as well as the cast parents. The children did a great job and looked fantastic in their costumes!
With thanks from Mrs Gwillim, Ms Hatice and Mrs Robbins
Outdoor Woodland Learning ECA
by Karen Lloyd
Our Outdoor Woodland ECA has run with a mixed age group from age 4 to age 11. Learners have enjoyed using the new additions to the site including a mud kitchen, puddle-pit, woodland arts and crafts circle, wash up station, rope swings and rope ladder as well as vegetable planters. Here are some photos of our first few sessions outdoors.
EYFS
Miss Lisa: EYFS1
It’s been a very busy time in Fish Class during the last month! We were delighted to showcase our artwork for the Primary Art Exhibition, especially enjoying creating our masks from deconstructed portraits. We’ve also enjoyed making our own playdough with Ms Lynne and learning new songs and dances in music with Ms Merve.
In our topic about what living things need to survive, we’ve been wondering if we can grow new food from old food. We took an old lettuce, chopped the top off and rested it in water. How big do you think it will grow? We think it will grow this big!
We’ve been delighted at the creativity of our students, even when we’re stuck inside with another rainy day! Kaya and Volodymyr decided we needed to go on a bus ride, which then turned into a train ride, so they organised chairs for the girls and off they went! The communication skills, planning, organising, negotiating and problem solving was a sight to behold.
Miss Lauren: Reception
Dragonflies visited the Strawberry Farm this month! We had a wonderful time planting our own strawberries!
We had a wonderful time creating art in the theme of "All About Me".
Year One
Miss Katrine: 1D & Miss Lizzie: 1S
Students in Year 1 have been learning about plants and what they need to grow in their Science lessons. During a cross-curricular lesson, they designed and decorated their own pots, before planting cress seeds. Over the next two weeks, the students observed how the seeds grew and looked after them. They were very excited when the time came to bring their sprouted seeds home to show their families.
Year Two
Ms. Verralls: 2V
2V enjoyed their assembly project this month. We spent time learning a new story called 'Someone Swallowed Stanley'. We learned about the problems of plastic pollution on the animals in science lessons and also researched about sea animals such as whale sharks and turtles. 2V enjoyed making their own costumes and art work with materials in DT and art lessons. Thank you to the parents for sending this in. We had fun developing our acting, dancing and singing skills on the stage. We really enjoyed showing this to our class parents. The children made Miss Verralls proud. We have many children in 2V who are excellent at acting, reading, singing, designing and decorating. Well done to all.
Ms. Aycan: 2A
On the 8th of May, 2A performed their assembly for the parents and visitors of our class. It was very exciting as many of the children had never performed an assembly drama before. They learnt their lines, made costumes and props and practised until we were ready to perform. The narrators Myra, Woojin, Turab and Aksel kept the story alive with great reading. Delilah and Elturan were excellent woodcutters. The animals of the forest all spoke their lines and acted brilliantly. Finally, Arden was very good as a boy from the forest. The song at the end was performed with enthusiasm. We were very happy that everyone enjoyed the performance.
Year Three
Mrs. Robbins: 3R
After a busy week of Assessments, 3R enjoyed a scavenger hunt in the Botanical Gardens. The students had to identify things that started with each letter of the alphabet.
Ms. Adesanya: 3A
In Science, we have been studying magnets and poles. We learnt that magnets come ın different shapes. We learnt that all magnets have a north and a south pole. We also learnt that magnets can push and pull and this force is called magnetism. Magnets have names such as bar magnet, horseshoe magnet and fridge magnet. Magnets attract things like paper clips but things that are not attracted to magnets are called non- magnetic materials. Opposıte poles will always attract each other and two poles the same will always repel each other. We investigated poles, asked and answered relevant questions.
Year Four
Ms. Lincoln: 4L & Ms. Newman: 4N
Children in year 4 have enjoyed learning about electricity in their science unit. They were able to create a complete electrical circuit using wires, lightbulbs and batteries and then investigate how switches break the circuit and which materials are electrical conductors or insulators. They also were able to see the effect on the brightness of the lightbulb by adding more batteries and other components.
Year Five
Ms. Lloyd: 5L
In our class, we have been working in the style of Karla Gerard, a folk artist. In recreating her work, we have applied different art techniques. Our art techniques have included i) using oil pastels, ii) layering then scratching into the oil pastel, iii) etching into ink and printing on paper. We are proud of the results.
Mr. Fawcett: 5F
5F have been studying forces in science this month - including gravity, normal forces and applied forces. When investigating Air Resistance, they designed their own parachutes to understand how the surface area might affect the speed at which a parachute will fall to the ground. Here, they used some key skills such as; making predictions, recording results, taking measurements and making a conclusion based on results.
They concluded that parachutes with a bigger surface area fell to the ground more slowly as the effect of air resistance was greater! Well done 5F!
Mr Dennison: Music
We have occasional opportunities in Music class for students to share individual skills in front of their classmates. It improves confidence, motivation, and can uncover unknown interests.
Year 5 has been playing the ukulele for only a short amount of time, but they are already reading simple notes and rhythms and have discovered that many, many songs can be played with the four chords that they have learned.
Music class can be both silly and educational. In Year 3, we have explored several different ways to play a very popular song with these crazy instruments: Boomwhackers!
Languages
Mrs. Gwilliam: ESL
This month year 3 intermediates have been reading Fairy Tales ready to make a quiz for their classmates using past tense questions. Year 3 beginners took a tour around the school to identify people and places. Year 5 have been practising the present perfect and played a memory game to help them remember the differences between the irregular past and the past participles. Year 6 played the game too, as they have been working on the past perfect. Year 6 also wrote Sea or Mountain adventure stories. I was impressed with their work. Well done to all the ESL students for their hard work this month!
Ms. Hatice: Turkish
Y5 students learned information about Turkish culture and they did a creative artwork project on the Galata tower.
Mr. Vincent: French
Bonjour à toutes et à tous!
Throughout this month, Year 4 students have been creating story boards for their upcoming French speaking class challenge, Year 3 students enjoyed creating revision card games, Year 6 students are creating a summer fashion show, working on clothes, colours, opinions and fabrics. Finally Year 5 students are about to sit their end of unit assessment on jobs. Congratulations to you all for your hard work!!
Au revoir et à bientôt
Monsieur Vincent
